Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Here's a job for someone

    Good morning,

I am a member in a group of individuals from various county agencies and non-profit organizations called MCINFO (i.e. Mendocino County
    Information).

Our vision is "to provide an easily accessible source of current, comprehensive, and accurate countywide community information". We will soon
be sending out the Request For Proposal, and I'd like to send it to any of you who believe you'd be up to the task.

I would love to design the application, myself, but am not set up as a consultant in business, and even if I were, submitting a proposal would be a
"conflict of interest". However, I think I could be an assistant to an
Alpha Developer if required, since I live right here and am pretty darned good at developing apps via Alpha 5v5(outside of X-basic).

In a nutshell, we want to create a website with a database that handles zip-code level, searchable data from all sorts of agencies and organizations. (I would create a table, distribute to each contributing agency/org, have them import their data from their regular program to the
table - or manually input it, zip it up and send it to the web-site
    database.)

ANYONE KNOW WHEN ALPHA'S WEB-INTERFACE SOFTWARE IS HITTING THE MARKET?

Anyway, if you are interested in getting a copy of the RFP, please email me back. I'll forward your address (email or snail mail) to the person handling the mailing list for the RFP.

    Thanks!
    Wanda

Wanda, no one is really saying when either Ver 6 or Web enabled Alpha will be released, it does seem though that we will not be seeing a release this year.

      WAAAAAA!!! Thanks, Barry.

Well, then, has anyone designed an Alpha table that is used on a web-site, searchable, sortable, etc...?

        Hey WAAAAAAda,

        >has anyone designed an Alpha table that is used on a

If the Web Server is not yet available, then it would be
very difficult to do, nes pas?

It's almost the same as what came first, the chicken or the egg?

Hey, Melvin...You DO have a way of bringing out the best in me...

It's obvious that the chicken came first, otherwise, who would have sat on the egg? In fact, the chicken was created with age, like Adam, and the mature apple tree for obvious reasons ;)

Now, for an Alpha db on a web site...it's quite clear that I am very ignorant in the world of the web. I thought that perhaps it's possible to put an Alpha table on a website, yet not "easy" - and that perhaps Alpha was planning on making it "easy" for us, as they've done with A5v5 and the action scripting.

          So there!

Bill Warner has designed several web applications using Alpha's Web Server.

He gave a presentation at the conference.

Stop teasing me, Charlie! Just kidding. So, does he have a beta version, or what?

He does have a beta version, and you can too Wanda. Just download it from was.alphasoftware.com. We uploaded a new beta last night that includes the HTML Editor and Web Page Genie that we showed off at the conference.

                  Wanda,
If you get any takers, please let me know. Our state is very interrested in a comprehensive website for services through all of Human Services. I am on a number of committees that are investigating such state or agency websites. Please e-mail me with any information you are looking to gather. Our county is always trying to be at the forefront of the state.

Way cool! I'll have to request the time to work with it, as my home computer is too antiquated to handle it...I'll put on my persuasion hat - wish me luck!

                      Hi Tom,

We'll hire a consultant, no doubt...I'm just hoping it's a consultant who uses Alpha dbms software.

There is a great push, state-wide, and possibly country-wide, to "link" data systems. I've seen a website that is very well developed, I think from New York. I'll dig up the address and send to you.

                        Why?

DBF files are DBF files and are fully ADO compliant. There are numerous programs on the market today that will let you access DBF files online.

The advantage of WAS is you don't need to learn another language to do so, but if you need access today, you can.

                        Best wishes,

                          Ray,
                          Please de-code "ADO", and "WAS".

I know what a DWIM key is, though. It's the DO WHAT I MEAN key.

                            Hi Wanda,

                            ADO = ActiveX database objects

                            WAS = Web Alpha Server
