Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Bug in Installer....

First let me say, this latest installer works much better than the previous or initial installer. Kudos to the A5 team! :)

I have been trying to get the installer to create a shortcut (desktop or menu) that behaves like the shortcut I created myself. This shortcut does not show the splash screen and it minimizes the Alpha5 screen on startup.
I have created 8 install packages and tried them all.. and they all work.. with one exception. The shortcut created will not use the filename.startup file, even tho it is present in both source and installed copies. And I have found why.
In the target box, in the shortcut properties, I compared all installs against my working target properties shortcut.
In all cases it doesn't include the "=" after the -INCLUDE for the filename.startup command.
    for example:
    Code:
    "C:\Program Files\app\alpha5.exe" "c:\program files\app\app.adb" -INCLUDE "c:\program files\app\app.startup"
Notice there is no equals sign after the -INCLUDE.
    It should look like:
    Code:
    "C:\Program Files\app\alpha5.exe" "c:\program files\app\app.adb" -INCLUDE="c:\program files\app\app.startup"
Other than this the installer works like a dream... can someone verify this behaviour? If it's a bug, any idea when the fix can be pushed out?

Thanks again to the A5 team... Jeff K.

Make sure you have the last build, as this bug was fixed a couple weeks ago. If you have a specific case where it doesn't work, please send me example screen shots.

Oops... spoke too soon... the icon I specified does not show up on client installs. It's right where it's supposed to be in the install folders too.
Tried to get it work by copying it to the runtime folder, re-running the installmaker and specifying no path to the icon, thinking that it would know it was relevent to the install folder.. no dice.
Anyone have this working and can tell me the proper folder and/or path to place the icon file in and how to correctly specify it's location during the installmaker process?

          RE: Bug in Installer....

The icon file can be anywhere, but I would recommend storing it in the folder with the database. You specify it by chosing it in the shortcut settings on the last page of InstallMaker.

              RE: Bug in Installer....

Tried that... same result.. no icon.
AND.. when the app is run after the install, a file is created (A_GLOSS.DBF) on the desktop. You can delete it but it pops back up everytime the app is run.
So any ideas whats up with this?

I can always include instructions for the user to fix the missing icon, but if it's working for others then I can only assume it must be something I am doing wrong. Danged if I know what it is tho... pretty simple to create the install.. right down to pointing it to the icon thats residing in the app folder.

              It's always something... :)

                RE: Bug in Installer....

don't know about installmaker issues, but if a_gloss.dbf appears on the desktop then it means that your shared path is pointing to the destop.

maybe your install maker app is setting the wrong registry settings for the shared path. go to the registry and see what it is set to. check the value for this registry key

                HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Alpha Software\Alpha Five 5.0\init\paths

                  RE: Bug in Installer....

Curious... I checked that key in my Win98 install.. which had no previous installs of A5.. the key specified does not exist. It ends after Alpha Five 5.0.. meaning I have no "init" to look in.
So I then checked it in my Win XP install... I have that key and the path is set to the install folder of A5V5.. thats the Developers copy.
So I tried the install (same as I used for the Win98 install) on my Win XP. It correctly places the shortcut with the icon on the desktop. And it does not create a A_GLOSS.DBF file on the desktop when the app is run.
Now ordinarily I wouldn't pursue this any farther, claiming a partial victory, BUT.. as most of our clients still use Win98 this will still be a problem for me.
Tried it on a Win2000 and I get the same results as the Win98 install.. ie: no icon and the A_GLOSS.DBF file is created on the desktop when the app is run. It also had no previous install of A5.

All this give you any more ideas why I am having this problem?

Thanks... and how was the conference? Cant wait to hear about all the great things the attendees got to see. :)

                    Note for Selwyn
This sounds like the same problem I emailed you with a few days ago.

I actually solved the problem by following Ken Nordins advice and bought Astrum Installer for $50 which allows you to create truly professional looking installations abd can be used for all sorts of projects not just Alpha.

                      RE: Bug in Installer....

                      Here is the latest.....

It simply will not create an install that will correctly display the icon. And it will create files on the desktop when the application is run. Sometimes as many as 8 files. All this on Win98 and Win2000 clients with no prior Alpha5 installs.
If installed on WinXP there are no problems.
And the installs were created on a WinXP computer.

That is as much as I have been able to determine on my own... in the amount of time I have to spend on it. Sure hope someone can recreate this to verify it as a bug.

                        Jeff,

Can you please send me screen shots of how you have the InstallMaker configured? I have tested the InstallMaker extensively on many different machines and it has always worked...especially after the most recent changes we made. I'd like to see your config so I can find out what is different.

                        Thanks,
