Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

That's because we were unable to reproduce your problem even with the exact settings you showed us in the screen shots.

        RE: Bug in Installer....

uh-oh... does this mean there isnt anything wrong? If I am the only one having a problem with the icon missing, then I must be doing something wrong on all 3 machines I used to build the installs... sure wish I knew what it was so I would stop doin it :)

          RE: Bug in Installer....

          Jeff,

Until you bundle a working example, and describe the machines you encounter the problem on with specificity, it's doubtful the folks at Alpha will be able to compare in a meaningful way the approach you take, with the approach they take. Screen shots are often not enought to permit troubleshooting of these complex systems.

Why not make a simple 'example' database, build the install, verify the problem, then document it thoroughly. You'll need to write it up as though the reader has no clue what machine it was built on, or what machine it was installed on. Soup to nuts. The whole banana. Leave no details out. It will take some work, but it sounds like you'd really like to get to the bottom of it, and this is probably the best way. At minimum you'll need to send them the database, and the resulting installation program.
          Good luck.

            RE: Bug in Installer....

Ummm... I thought with the description of the problem, and the screenshots that I included, that the problem would be easy to reproduce.
Run the installer, be sure to point to an icon file in the installmaker settings, set the shortcut to the desktop... after installmaker is done... take that to a machine THAT HAS NEVER SEEN ALPHA... and see if the icon gets installed to the desktop. Tell ya right now it wont,,... when you look at the properties of the shortcut, it's still looking for the icon in the ORIGINAL datapath. So naturally it will not be able to find it.
So simply, the path for the icon doesnt get set to the installpath when you run the install.
So since I can reproduce this ailment on command I sure thought it was a bug. But I guess I was wrong since no one else can reproduce the problem.
Checking out a different installer now that looks pretty good. Wonder if I will make the same mistake in this one too!? :)

              RE: Bug in Installer....

We were finally able to reproduce the problem with your latest description. It appears that if the .ico file was grabbed from an unrelated path to your application, it is created incorrectly. Temporarily, the problem can be solved by simply copying the .ico file into your application's folder. We are working on a fix, though.

                  Jeff

Your problem brings up a good point frequently overlooked. On some systems, user rights might restrict a user to a specific directory and any sub-directories. It is good practice to save everything related to an application with that in mind. In some cases, like yours, you may have multiple copies of the same file (the icon file) on the drive, since you would save a copy in each application folder or sub-folder. Then it would be available to anyone with rights to that folder.

We have a fix for the shortcut icon problem and it will be available in the next patch.
