Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Conference 2003

Thank you to everyone that made the just ended conference a success. Valerie for the great job setting it all up, Selwyn and Richard and all the presenters. Job well done. There was a lot to be taken in by all.

When you see what's in V6 you will be amazed, all backward compatible of course. It's all very exciting.

For those of us who weren't able to make it, I suppose the first word that comes to mind is...

    WHEN?!?!

        RE: Conference 2003

It will be coming when it is done. I woulkdn't stop developing in v5 but when it comes (early next year perhaps) everything will be able to be converted automatically.

Browses will have events and all kinds of properties.

In a nutshell, A5v6 will be able to be "upsized" and used against backend data in MS SQL Server, Oracle, DB2, or what I suspect will be the primary database, MySQL. It can be used with dbf as now but if upsized (this is fully automated) it will be enterprise ready. All the development you are doing now will still work with upsizing, it will just call to a SQL table or what ever you are using to store data.

Selwyn has indicated that their testing with MySQL has shown that their drivers are blazingly fast. (When compared to Access)

I think the big thing here is that everything you are doing now will still work without recoding everything so v5 is the logical stepping stone to v6.

          RE: Conference 2003

Given what V6 entails another year is not unrealistic to expect delivery, sounds like it will be well worth the wait. What is disappointing is according to the the last interviewer with Aaron in the Newsletter, the Web Application Server is dependant on version 6. This means that it is 1+ years out. Did you hear anything at the conference to the contrary?

Maybe it won't be a year, but I wouldn't hold up development waiting for it. When it comes it comes, and all your work will still be good. So for now V5 is a fine development platform. V6 in most ways I think will look the same as V5. The differences are mostly under the skin.

I also had the impression that you can also mix and match your data in V6. So some could be dbf's, some Access, some MySQL. It's transparent to the user. And essentially transparent to the developer because you don't need to change anything you do based on the data type.

                John

The impression I got at the conference is that the elements of V6 that are needed for WAS are essentially complete. The main element is a concept called a data object, which links the various back end data sources to the Alpha interface. The production version of WAS will use the data object concept and will work seemlessly with the current version of A5V5. From what I heard, WAS should be available before V6. The actual timetable for that would have to come from Alpha.

Thanks Jerry.. thats good news that we apparently do not have to wait for the entire V6 to get the WAS. I personally believe that it would be harmful to Alpha if the WAS took another year for release.

                    RE: Conference 2003

that's exactly correct. you can use any backend that you want and your application can use data from multiple backends (e.g. oracle, sql server, access, mysql, even xml files) totally transparently. i.e. you can use the familiar xbasic syntax:

                    t = table.open()
                    etc.

Just so some don't take it wrong, I believe the 'question' posed by Russ - "early next year perhaps" - is his guess. As I recall, Selwyn was very careful not to make any predictions and, personally, I think that was the right thing to do.
