    Default Running Total in Browse

I finally came up with a way to display the running total in a browse, similar to a Balance field in a checkbook while correcting that last balance field problem some of us faced.

One word of note, the browse will run slowly especially with a lot of records, however you can cut down on the display records in several ways.

Here's how to accomplish this task:

    1. Create your browse with your records.
    2. Ensure that the browse has a defined index atached to it.
    3. Add a calculated field to the browse. Call it RunTotal and set it to the following expression:

    if(eof("checkbook"),total(paid_amt),run_total(Paid_Amt))

checkbook = the name of the database of the browse.
paid_amt = the list of paid items in the checkbook

    4. Add a column to the browse and in Properties call it "Balance". Set the field to the calculated field you just created namely RunTotal.
    5. Save the browse and let it run.

You will see that it will take some time to run and refresh, but the last record in the Balance field will now be correct.

Enjoy and have fun with Alpha5!

I was able to do exactly what you did EXCEPT get the RUN_TOT field into the browse. Edit Field Rule Rules showed that my formula was working but could not get into my browse. I will work on that using your instructions, and in the meantime:

Using your example, how do you (can you?) group records by (eg) month to show that in Jan you wrote checks (paid_amt) totalling 1287.65, in Feb 2387.23, ... and on.

The RUN_TOT will be useless to me if a can't do the running total by group (on my field Disk# which is a 3-digit number whole number).

    Any suggestions much appreciated.

    Thanks - Bob

I’m still looking for suggestions on how to do running total in table (browse) view; is it possible? If so, how? (I have v5 Home/Small Business).

I desperately need this because #@!!%&@@ XP won't run a (DOS) database that I very much need to "migrate" to this new computer.

Note: Well, actually, XP will "run" the DOS program (RapidFile) but ONLY at 100% CPU use; it's slow, sluggish, and everything else slows to a jerky, very slow snail's pace. I see on the net that many people have this same problem (with XP's NTVDM = Windows(NT) (V)irtual (D)os (M)achine.

A solution to this NTVDM problem would also solve my database problem; anyone know about this?

    Any help much appreciated!

Since you have the home edition, maybe a screen shot of how I made my example work?

For those of you working with checkbook applications and running totals etc who haven't checked out Peter Wayne's book(s), you really ought to since he uses a checkbook application as a teaching tool in at least one of them.

Finian is right. Peter Wayne's books are invaluable for setting up a home checkbook system. Here is a screenshot of one of mine largely based upon Dr. Wayne's methods, but with many variations as well.

    Hi Peter,

The example form you posted here on a running total is exactly what I'm trying to accomplish. In fact, my form is very similar to yours. I'm trying to use his code, replacing his field names with mine, however, I keep on getting errors when I try to use it.

Dr, Wayne's example has scripts for Mark, Un-mark, etc. I tried to code my app to re-calculate on a OnSaveRecord script which I placed in Fields Rules, Events, Record Events. I coded the script in the bal_fwd field event, bypassing all his other scripts.

If I package up my app, can you take a quick look at it. I'm going crazy trying to figure out this problem. If not, can you send me an example of yours?

    Thanks,
    Rudy

Hey Peter, since your program is now 10 years old, have you put that in public domain (free or small fee). I have made several versions of the one I have, gave up and went with Quicken, but don't particular like their report system. I can do better in A5 reports.
