Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Subform frustration -- need help

I have a form that is working perfectly as a stand alone form. But, if I use it as a subform it doesn't work anymore.

I have an "On change" event attached to a checkbox which launches an Xdialog box. When used as a subform, the Xdialog box still launches, but, the variables that it gathers are not placed in the fields on the subform. I converted my action script to XBasic and changed all instances of "topparent" to just "parent" but it still doesn't work.

Would someone be kind enough to take a look at the attached file that I made to illustrate the problem I'm having? The "On change" event is attached to the "AGC" checkbox. The form itself is called "servicetest". The form containing "servicetest" as a subform is called "MemberServiceTest".

      Charlain,

I don't ahve the full version available at this location to check it out but when the form is used as a subform, I think you have to make frference to the form's object name such as: form1.restofscript

It needs the full path for the data to follow. That's my thought.

yes, Ken is right, to reference fields on the subform from the parent form you need to use an expression like...

        topparent:form1:field2.value = "testing"

i have updated your sample db with similar expressions to those as above.

if you want to use the subform as a regular form aswell you will have to add some more checks/conditions.

Just duplicate the form, use one as the subform.

Tim, your solution fixed the initial problem I asked for help with -- but I have discovered another one.

Will you look at the checkboxes for me? They work great on the form, but when used as a subform, the checkmarks are sometimes disappearing when another checkbox is checked.

When you open the form containing the subform, click on New Record, then click on APC--checkmark appears. But, if you click on WTR or NWR the APC checkmark disappears.

              Thanks,
              Charlain

                Charlain,

I downloaded you zip file and loaded it with A5 RT. I don't have the full version on this computer.

Not sure which form has the subform but I'm guessing it's the MemberServiceTest form. I did see the check mark disappear.

Suggestion: Create a new form and a new subform with just the one field, the field in question. Place the new subform on the form and try it. Does the check mark stay? If so, add another field to the subform and see what happens. Keep adding fields until the problem occurs. Now you've narrowed down the area of the problem. That will be easier to diagnose.

Thanks for the suggestion, Ken. I'll try it. Another weird thing about this -- it only happens on the FIRST new record you try to enter. After you save the first one, it doesn't happen again.

When you say, "it only happens on the FIRST new record you try to enter", I presume you are referring to the first record entered when the form is opened vs the very first record of the database?

If you try my suggestion, let us know if it happens with just the field in question on the subform. Keep the objests on the form / subform to the absolute minimum.
