Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Speed across a LAN ...

I know there have been several discussions about this issue, but I find the performance on a network to be, at times, much too slow. I do use network optimize and this does speed things up comnsiderably but still much slower than on a stand alone, and at times, it seems barely acceptable.

For example, one of my work stations is a 750 Mhz machine, the LAN is 10/100. I have 2 billing programs on a server. One that is commercially sold, and the other is one I wrote in Alpha. The first one runs fine across the LAN, mine runs slow and at times VERY VERY slow. It can sometimes take 10 to 15 seconds or more for a form to load. Another form that has an embedded browse that has RTF memos in it, loads VERY slow, like watching the screen draw line by line.

Am I doing something wrong? Am I the only one who is experiencing this?

This is not a complaint, because I sure do love Alpha, but this is a major stumbling block that I sure wish I could solve. Any input would be appreciated ...

RE: Speed across a LAN ...

my guess is that the form is either
    a) needlessly complex, with lots of calculated fields, or
    b) is based on a large set.
loading the data for large sets over a network is time-consuming. alpha (and all relational databases) work much faster if you only load the data that you need. it is faster to go from one form based on one table to another form based on a single table than to run forms based on large and unwieldy sets.
my general rule of thumb--if your data entry form contains more than 2 tables, it's probably a mistake. if it contains more than 3 tables, it certainly is a mistake.

RE: Speed across a LAN ...

      Hi Peter,

      Thanks for your kind help.

One of my main forms is not even based on a set, just a table of patients, and it is still pretty slow (or at least significatly slower than stand alone, or the comparison to the commercially sold product).

One form that is really slow though is based on one parent, and 2 children off the parent. The parent of the set is the patients table. One child is a table that contains progress notes. The other child is an empty table that is used simply as a template for data entry.

Any more insights would surely be welcomed.

RE: Speed across a LAN ...

i don't understand why your forms load so slowly. you might try opening the default forms for the patient table and see if the default form is as slow. you should not have more than a momentary delay.
if the form loads slowly but you can navigate quickly from patient to patient, then your form has some complicated setup that is taking a long time. you have to see if simplifying the form helps. if the form loads slowly and each move from patient to patient takes a long time, then you know that something in your display of each record takes a long time--typically, having lots of calculated fields displaying on the form.

Makes sense - I will check this out tomorrow at the office.

Thanks. I will let you know.

            Hi Gary,

Which OS are you using, the later versions need more RAM. How much RAM
is in the station? I insist on 128, but usually get more.

This is a follow up - On further reflection, my office LAN seemed slower ever since a new copier was installed and netwroked with the LAN. It turns out that the copier itself had an appropriate LAN card (10/100), but the switch that they installed was only 10. Duh .. When that was replaced the "speed problem" is no longer a problem.

Thanks for everyone's help - I just wanted to get back and let you know what the cause of this problem was for me.
