Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Report won't print, but can save as pdf & prin

    Hi,

I have a report based on a set that worked until yesterday. It is both filtered and ordered. When I try to print it to my HP printer, I get an error message printed instead:

    PCL XL error

    Subsystem: KERNEL
    Error: MissingAttribute
    Operator: BeginPage
    Position: 4

The report can be previewed, but shows blank pages. I can then save the report as a PDF report and then the report appears with all the data and can be printed just fine.

My other reports are still behaving themselves.

I am not sure where to even begin looking to determine what the problem is. Is my report corrupted somehow? Should I just rebuild it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Robin Sculthorpe

Not much to go on. If it worked up till now. This is what I would do.

    Did you?

    Compact the DB

    Restore from a backup.

I hope you have been backing up your DB.

One of these should fix the problem short of rebuilding the report. If not perhaps someone else can chime in with a specific solution.

Will other reports, forms, browses, etc. from the affected database still print correctly?

If you create a new report (nothing fancy), will it print?

RE: Report won't print, but can save as pdf &

        Hi,

I've been away for a while. I did compact the database, but that didn't help. All my other reports print just fine. I do backups, but I backup my application as well as my data in the same backup. So if I restore to an earlier version, I will lose some data that would have to be re-entered. Guess I will start backing up my data and application separately.

As a work-around, I have found that I can use the printer override options and it will print correctly. It just won't print normally using the printer definition stored with the layout.

Thanks for all your help, but for now, I'm not going to try to figure it out - I'm OK with the work-around.

        Kind regards,
        Robin Sculthorpe

          Robin

Which HP printer are you using?

I have one client with a HP 1200 laserjet that is very fussy about print jobs. Things that print fine on a HP4, need a little more fiddling on the 1200.

ie, can't have page over flows or custom size paper without blank pages or other problems coming up.

RE: Report won't print, but can save as pdf &

            Hi,

I have an HP Laserjet 4100. This is the first time, I've had any difficulty with being unable to print a report.

I have had a problem with the printer override function, but I think it's a Microsoft Windows problem, not an HP problem. I have a button that I want to print X number of copies of one report as specified by the user, and then print ONE copy of another report without the user having to specify the number. Unfortunately, selecting the number of copies for the second report in the printer override function does not work at all. The number of copies chosen for the first report is the number of copies that are automatically selected for the second report. I haven't figured out a work-around for this yet. The reports are actually for prescription labels and the last label (which only needs one copy) is to affix to the actual written prescription to document required information that would not be provided on the patient's prescription container. I have looked at Microsoft's site, but their suggested work-around is to have the user specify the correct number of copies. Ha Ha! If only the printer window would default to one copy, instead of the previous number of copies, that would be beautiful! Somehow, I don't think they will fix this if I request it!

            Kind regards,
            Robin Sculthorpe
