Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    different code editor

    Hi everyone
I have worked in Alpha before but now is my first attempt in A5.5. I started to do an action script and my code editor doesn't look like the code editor in the documentation. My code editor doesn't have the Add new action, delete action, edit action, arrows or if buttons. There is no action script icon on the taskbar. I just now updated to the most recent build on A5.5 I have runtime installed on the same computer and have A5.4 on the computer.

    Thanks for any help.

    RE: different code editor

are you editing an action script that you originally created in v4.5? if so, then a5v5 brings up the old v4.5 action script editor.

if you are creating a new action script, then a5 brings up the new action script editor.

Should be in the Books subdirectory. It's called "Introduction to Action Scripting".

              Hi
On page 5 of Introduction to Action Scripting It says to open Learning Action Scripting and tell you where it is located. It's not there.

              Thanks

                RE: different code editor

                A couple of ways.

You should have a key on your keyboard - Prt Sc
                (Print Screen)

Press that and you have a copy of the screen in the clipboard. Then you can paste that into an editor - like word or wordpad. It'll be fairly large 500kb - 1500 kb. Zip that and send it or post it to a message on the board.
(Check windows help for ctrl and alt options with the prt sc key)

Other options include using a screen capture program like Snagit - from techsmith.com

Others have been mentioned on the message board.

                    RE: different code editor

                    Two ways to handle this.

                    1. Under the file - edit - view -... menu items are icons.

The first two icons create scripts.
                    1. xbasic
                    2. action scripting
                    the third is:
                    3. functions

                    or.

                    2. close that code editor.

Right click on the operations tab (or any tab) on the control panel.

The submenu will have an entry named code (last one on the list). It's not checked.

                    Check it.

Then press code tab and the new button above the tabs.

                    Choose Action Scripting.

                    You're on your way.

ps - the code tab will go away after the database has been run with the runtime version. Just reselect it if that happens.

It also says if it's not listed click on more.
You will find the "Learning Action Scripting" in a sub directory of your A5V5 install directory. Mine is C:\Program Files\A5V5\Learning Action Scripting.

                          Hi Ken:

You can download any or all of the Alpha Five v5 books here: http://www.alphasoftware.com/support/tech/alpha5/help.asp

If you need all of the books, you can choose the "Download All the Books At Once" option. The downloaded .exe will install all of the books/manuals in the proper A5 subdirectory, and will make all of the books available from the A5 help menu (Help... Books).
