Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

"auto-fill" records in a separate table

Would appreciate some help with the following problem.

I have a booking form into which one enters the arrival date, departure date, and the cottage(s) allocated. The booking reference is an auto-increment field for each booking. There is a further field that calculates the number of actual nights between arrival and departure.

The second table is basically a calendar, with field for each of the cottages.

I am working along the lines of the following

Set up global variables for the arrival date, number of nights and whichever cottage check boxes are logically true.

Enter booking parameters, then onsave activate/show the calendar table,

Fetch the calender records till the arrival date is reached. (while not date. Fetch).

Set up a for to loop for the nights, and a nested loop to check each record for the cottages that equate to true, entering the booking reference number in each record for each cottage for each night,

I have set up the first record manually in case my explanation is wanting.

I wonder if the solution could be better achieved using case, Wend, if then or some form of Posting.

Attached a .exe cut-down booking form and calendar browse form

I somehow think that this problem and solution must be of interest to a whole bunch of people learning to use Alpha V.

    RE:

    Brian,

If you want specific help, you must state specific issues. "I'm working along the lines"is not specific. It will be helpful to state ONLY one issue at a time. Also, if you didn't already do so, include specific instructions on the download such as notes or a help file.

      Brian,

I agree this does look interesting as a learning experience. I like the way you structured the question into suggestions for "Code snippets".

      I'll download and follow along.

        RE:

Then I abjectly apologise. Perhaps i am not scriptually as verbose as I would wish to be.

I have ben as specific as I can, I am specifically working along the lines I have outlined, and whilst i would dearly appreciate assistance, i would prefer you ignored my request rather than get involoved with semantics.

As far as the uploaded files go, it is an executable file, simply download it and double click - that should do it. I guess I felt I had used the most simple form of compression and installation available.

I suppose it would be fair to conclude that if any interested parties find they cannot download the file, and recognise the contents, then they are not likely to be in a position to aassist me anyway.

I am disappointed that you feel I have not adhered to the standards you feel necessary. It does however illustrate the learning curve that I and perhaps other of my limited experience are experiencing.

        Regards

        Brianp

          Brian,

There are many who can recognize what you've done. However, knowing exactly what you want is another story. Most of the folks who help are limited in the availability of time. The more concise you can be, the easier it is for them to assist.

I'm not trying to get involved with semantics but merely point out what you can do to help others quickly get a better understanding of your needs. Many questions draw few responses, not because folks are unwilling to help, but it's very time consuming to try and figure out the problem.

            RE: Auto Fill

            Brian,

I downloaded your file and was impressed with the work you've put into this.

You might want to go into your date fields and in the property settings on the form, select "calendar" for the field type.

I think we should discuss your set-setup before we get into the detail of writing code.

Would a real life scenario be that a GUEST would make a RESERVATION for a COTTAGE for multiple DATES?

If so, each capitalized word above could be a table with an ID field that would automatically fill in for child records.

RESERVATION = 1:Many with COTTAGES (might a guest stay in more than one cottage for an extended stay?) and Cottage 1:M with DATES.

            Set Structure
            RESERVATIONS = COTTAGES = DATES

Add a field to RESERVATIONS for COTTAGE_ID fill using a lookup expression based on open dates.

Now I'm writing and cannot find your first message to reference !@#$!

Anyway - do you see where I'm going. Is my scenario accurate?

              Thanks for your input Tom.

I will copy and print your reply so I can refer to it whilst looking at coding. It may take me a while to understand, so bear with me.

Whilst i am familier with Quick Basic, and similar 'languages' Xbasic syntax still gets me confused, and the brain fogs. I will get back to you when I have absorbed your suggestions.
