Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Update fails to find any records to update

    I have a few fields that I want to perform an update on. For example a member is active ("A) if their renewal date is greater than today. I have a member active field based on a date that gets set during data entry. The Active field is a fixed field not a calculated one I would like to use the Update operation in a script that will update whether the member is active. I am using the Date() as a reference for whether the member is active or not. It seems to run 50% of the time when run from within the Update genie/setup but fails to run from anywhere else script.

    Also: While running the operation and watching it run through the records to update if the operation "scans" the database (blue line status bar) twice when it goes to run then it will actually update the fields. If it scans only once it fails.

    Anyone have an idea why this doesn't work? It sure worked well in A4

    Yup, I do. There's something not quite right with your expression. Very profound statement, I know. But, that's the problem 9.9 times out of 10.

    If you would like to share your expression, we might be able to help figure it out.

    Also, check out the Update section in the What's New in V5 documentation.

      Here's the equation I've been using. It says (to me) that if the new renewal date plus 6 months is greater or equal thatn today's date then the are Active (A) otherwise they are in active.

      if(ADDMONTHS(NEWRE_DATE,+6)>=date(),'A','I')IF

      Here's the other equation:

      (USESEC='Y'.AND.(MONTH(DATE())>=MAILPSTART).AND.(MONTH(DATE())

        The IF in the first line in the response above goes with the second equatiion.

          Joshua,

          if(ADDMONTHS(NEWRE_DATE,+6)>=date(),'A','I')

          Try using the " mark to enclose A and I instead of the ' mark.

            Same thing. In fact it's still as flaky before. It now will even report that the records were updated even when they were in fact not updated at all.

              RE: Update fails to find any records to update

              I figured out a way around this bug (?) (v1336). I setup fields rules that are calculated on the date() similar to the ones I was trying to get to run in the field update operation which didn't work. So I reset the field rules so that if I changed a field (I use the field name "dumbbit") then they would be recalculated. The DUMBBIT can easily be changed using an update field operation. Then this DUMBBIT forces the field rules to be recalculated which gets me my field update operation that I was seeking to being with and should work!

              see sample Field Rule changes below:

              IF(DUMBBIT="3",IF(ADDMONTHS(NEWRE_DATE,6)>DATE(),"A","I"),IF(ADDMONTHS(NEWRE_DATE,6)>DATE(),"A","I"))

              This forces a field rule calculation no matter what as it evalautes the same equation whether the DUMBBIT is 3 or not. (AT least it should)

              I would still guess the bug with A5 not being able to do an operation update based on the date() still applies.
