Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Text Formatting

I'm looking for ideas on how to format text stored in variables.
On a report header I am using 3 variables, CompName, City, State. I want to put these on the form as:

    alltrim(compname)+", "+alltrim(city)+" "+UT(State)

    This or course works fine.
However, I want to apply formatting to the text to make the font for compname for instance 16, and 14 for city and state.
If I put them on separately I can format them, but lose the spacing as the string lengths change. As one combined string I get the string formatting but lose the formatting.
Anyone have ideas on how to do this. I tried RTF but this doesn't work for reports. There is probably a simple way to do this but I'm missing it.

    RE: Text Formatting

Russ, last I heard you could not have different fonts, colors or sizes within a single string. When you concatenate the fields you're creating a single string. Hope I'm wrong, but if it were me, I'd look for a way to separate the fields into separate strings, yet still achieve the desired look.

      RE: Text Formatting

      Hi Russ....

Not sure this will apply to what you are doing....

I was writing table data from a one to many child as a single string into a text file for use in a merge document. All text was formatted with the same font size but when merged the fields inside the string did not align properly even though the white space between fields in the string should have made it so. The reason being that most true type fonts are variable width.... different characters occupy a different amount of space. I finally figured out that I needed to use a fixed width font so that all the fields that made up the string for the merge field would lign up..... this worked.

If I put them on separately I can format them, but lose the spacing as the string lengths change.

It looks like the 3 variables are all on the same line, so I am not sure that I am giving you something that will help...... also not sure I am understanding the "lose the spacing" comment that you mention??

        RE: Text Formatting

This probably can't be done. By lose the spacing I mean if one company is called
        Joe's Ice Co, Mytown, CT

        and another is called

Marybelle and Geronimo's Pizza Parlor and ice cream shop

The strings will be of different length. If I put them in one string I can format them the same. If they are 3 strings I can format them separately but will have weird spacing. If I allow space for Joe's there will be a blank space when the longer one is used. This is all to try to make the app movable to different companies.

        Thanks
        Russ

          Russ,

Easy solution for me was to put them on different lines.

            I like Tom's idea Russ.....

IF "there were a property for the xy position of each field you could get the length of each string & adjust that property to allow for spacing difference".....END IF

              RE: Text Formatting

I thought of one line, but am trying to make a compact report. I think I'll just allow enough space to fit most of whatever comes along. Should be good enough.

              Thanks for the input

                Russ:

Create an RTF field that contains the three fields. You can assign the fonts and font sizes at will.

                I hope this helps.

Thanks, but doesn't work on a report unless you know of a way
