Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Conditional Object Trouble...

    Help!

I dropped a Conditional on my form then defined a condition. After that I stretched the conditional over several objects on my tabbed form. Now I can't delete the conditional without all my objects disappearing. I can't shrink it either. How do I start over without losing what I had before I started with this conditional?

    Oh No Dale!!!

Sorry this isn't what you want t to hear. But, if you can't delete the object w/o the rest coming with it, ouch... Basically, you covered up your fields with an object using very sticky adhesive. You know what happens when you pull tape that's been on an object too long? Well....same thing. Maybe there's a way??? Let's hope!!

    Did you make a backup?

      Ken,

      You got that right!!

I'll be backing up my forms before messing with a conditional again.

As I got your message I was trying to move my objects off the conditional and then I deleted the conditional. I think I got it... We will see! Now I jest need to move everything back to it's original position.

I think this issue could use some work or maybe some better explanation in the users guide!

Thanks for letting me know I was in trouble, at least now I know that's what I needed to do. I was hoping maybe for a better solution. Maybe next release.

This has happened to me more than once. When I want to get rid of the conditional, I try to remember to remove the objects attached to it first and then remove it.
Lets say I have two conditions; right click on the conditional object, select default, click on the object attached to the conditional and move it to another part of the form, click on the coditional again, select the next condition, click on the object(s) attached to it, move it(them), remove the condition and then replace the objects that were moved.
Also I try to preview/view the form or report before saving it . If I don't like theresult, I close the form/report, delcine to save and repoen to try again.

Notice I said "I try to remember". I spend about 30 minutes this afternoon forgetting that little trick.

        Regards
        Jim

          hi dale:

"How do I start over without losing what I had before I started with this conditional? "

been there, got the tee-shirt, coffee mug and diploma!

coding can be like playing russian roulette. i have a static backup directory that i backup to before running any new code. each day i create a folder with some creative name like 022103 and then prior to "pulling the trigger" on some new code i save all my app in a sub folder with another creative name like 125pm. at the end of the day i back up my app to an archive folder again (using the date as a subfolder name) and delete the static folder.

the amount of frustration you can save is well worth the time spent on a few keystrokes.

          backup, backup, backup, my friend!

          regards,

          ed

You might try just dragging the object completely to an empty part of the form. That has worked for me in the past. Then you can delete it.

              Ed,

Very good advise! I'll be making backups on a regular basis from now on!
