Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Can't Mark Records

Just installed Ver. 5 a couple of days ago. When I try to mark records, nothing happens. No check mark or change in color or greyscale occurs in the box to the left of the record (in browse mode). Doesn't matter whether I use Ctrl+M or right mouse click and choose "Mark Record" or go to the Records tab and choose "Mark Record." I am so used to using "Mark Records" to mark records randomly (that aren't related in any way). I can't tell if the records are marked (and just not showing it), or not marking at all. I know there is an operation to mark or unmark records, but I don't want to mark all of them in a query (for example), but just certain ones (non-contiguous) out of a query or table.

Can someone please help with this? Please keep in mind that I am not a developer, nor do I write script. I HAVE used Alpha products for more than 10 years, but in a pretty low-tech way.

Thanks -- this is really important to me.

    RE: Can't Mark Records

First try using action scripting to mark a record or right click in a browse and select mark. This is just to make sure you are recognizing what is marked. It only makes a box in the left column thats a little darker than normal. I have been using the ondouble click event to mark a field either "X" or "". This does the marking but is a lot more seeable. You can also use a logical checkbox on a field for this.

      RE: Can't Mark Records

I just tried marking some records in a browse, and a vertical box was placed in the margin to the left, J. I don't know what is going on in your case, unless you are trying to do this within the browse creation mode. It won't work there. You shouldn't have to do anything with xbasic or anything else to make this work. Just be sure you are in the browse entry mode. If you still can't get this to work, I would suggest downloading the latest build of the program. It might cure whatever is causing the problem. Sometimes just shutting down the computer and starting it up again is the best cure for such anomalies.

      Good luck,
      Sylvia

        RE: Can't Mark Records

Thank you for your suggestion. I logged on and downloaded the most recent update for Alpha5 Ver. 5, then installed it and re-booted my computer. It STILL did not solve the problem with the failure to mark records. I even deleted my old browse, then built a new one. Then, in VIEW mode, I tried to mark some records. Absolutely nothing happened. Not even a darkening of the gray box (as suggested by the other person kind enough to respond to me).

Just in case the records were really marked but just not showing any indication of it, I tried printing the records I had tried to mark, making sure to choose the option of print only marked records. I get a box saying that there are no records.

Any other ideas, or any way to contact Alpha without paying $2.00 per minute to see if it is possible that my application files are corrupted?

Tried the samething here and found that I can mark and unmark at will. If you try it in the default browse and/or default form do you get the same thing. Also, try to mark/unmark a record in Alphasports. If it works there, it's something in your app causing the problem.

Excellent suggestions. The mark/unmark would not work in the default browse, either. But it DID work in AlphaSports. So at least now I know that the problem is somewhere in the database, and not in the AlphaFive program. THAT helps a lot to be able to narrow it down -- it was driving me crazy.

I am not using an application. I am trying to work with data that I imported from Microsoft Works. I have no idea why it will not let me mark/unmark. But maybe I can create a separte logical field that I can use to mark or unmark records to at least manipulate the data that I need. It is a relief to know that I won't have to do it with ALL my databases, but can use Alpha's built-in Mark on those instead.

how did you import the data from Works? did you use alpha's import genie or did you do it some other way?

                RE: Can't Mark Records

Used the import genie. But there are some quirks here: I am helping out some friends who know NOTHING about databases (and are not very computer literate). Without going into the whole story, I am taking data that they entered into Works on their computer, opening it in my computer (with a different version of Works), then importing it into Alpha using the import genie. Ultimately I will have to then EXPORT it to Access after I get it cleaned up. Why am I using Alpha instead of going directly to Access? Because I LOVE Alpha (and have worked with it longer), and I know very little about Access and keep hitting against brick walls in it because I don't do scripting, or macros, or programming. Why am I converting it to Access afterwards? Because they have it in their computer (and they don't have to buy a new program) and "that's what everyone is using."
