Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Scroll Bars on Forms again

I have brought this up before but never got any answer so I'll try again. On any of my menus that are formatted to eliminate the scroll bars, when the user rolls the mouse wheel the form scrolls. This is a real pain. The user can accidentally scroll to where the buttons disappear, then they are stumped. Does anyone know of a way to lock down forms to prevent scrolling.
2 screen shots are attached (2 messages) showing the problem.

      Russ,

why is your form so tall? I've always thought the scroll bars never appear unless the form won't 'fit' on screen.

If you size it to fit the display, where would the scroll wheel take the user? I think the display would be locked.

Have you tried this? -- tom

If you must keep the form height the same, you might put a little text box at the bottom, telling the user what foolishness has brought them there.

I believe that the scroll wheel is a web browser integrated mouse control function. There is nothing I know of that you can do from within A5 to disable browser controls.

This is a known problem, particularly with WinXP. My understanding is that Alpha has been aware of the problem for some time but has no cure. Apparently it is related to the mouse drivers for scroll wheels. I have it in WinXP but not Win98 or WinME. It certainly looks weird.

              Russ,

I'm not an A5 expert but this situation is not uncommon in environments where resiable forms are common. The typical trick for handling the situation is to divide the form into two (or more) parts. One part is typically thin and contains the controls you always want visible. The other contains the builk of the controls--the ones most likely to cause scrolling.

              So:
              ---------------------------------------------
              [funcbutton] status-readout [importanticon]
              ---------------------------------------------
              Control
              Control

Thanks for all the replies. I think I've tried all the easy stuff to solve this, but I don't think I've checked this in Win98. I will do this. If it's a windows problem I guess I will live with it but it sure would look more professional if I could lock these down.
Tom, I don't think it has anything to do with the sizing of the form. It seems to do it regardless of how it is sized.

Thanks again, I'll check on win98.

i have exactly the same problem with an application that runs with the forms maximised and with the "SDI" look. The forms will all scroll completely out of sight even though they are smaller than the screen prior to being maximised. I am running XP Pro as well.

It appears that this problem is with windows. I use win 2k but most of the clients will be win98 for a while. This is mainly cosmetic and I can train my users to not scroll on forms, but it would still be nice if there were a way to lock them down. Perhaps for v6?

You could always suggest that they don't use a scollable mouse, but just a regular 2 button mouse. Consider it a money savings, since the basic mouse is a little cheaper.

That's true, and some users have non scrollable so no problem there. Others have them because they are great where you have to scroll a lot (except in alpha)

I'm still hoping for a fix in v6.

RE: Scroll Bars on Forms again

If you click outside one of the embedded browses and scroll with the mouse wheel, does a vertical scroll bar appear and the form scroll? On mine (win 2kpro.) it scrolls even though it is set not to. I am thinking this is a windows thing, not Alpha, but have had no definite confirmation of this.

I have a nother problem with the scroll bars. I'm running XPpro but it also appeurs wit win2000.

In a tabfom i've made a emmbededbrowse with a vertical scroll bar. When i scroll the bar down or up and keep de left mouse button pressed alpha close. Awarding to my system administrator is this a "api" problem.

                              Have anyone also this problem?
