Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5.load()

    Hi all,

    I'm wondering if anyone has worked through the issues regarding this method which allows you to write code to load a new database without closing A5 or exposing the control panel.

    My first observation is that is works:
    A5.load("full path to adb to open")
    runs like a top.

    Second:
    The auto help for this method is incorrect.

    My question:
    Is it advisable to close the current database first which is what
    A5.database_close()
    would appear to be for.

    Using the interactive window I opened a new database using A5.load() without explicitly closing the current one and had no trouble.

    Further question:
    I have a set of command line switches built into the shortcuts I use to start applications. If I use A5.load() to start an application I lose these switches. Has anyone worked out the most convenient method for doing these setups when using A5.load()?

    Thanks as always,
    Bill

    RE: A5.load()

    Bill,

    Haven't done it, so take with an appropriately large grain of salt but:

    It seems like you solve both your issues if you skipped the database close and reload, and instead opened a new Alpha 5 with your switches, then exiting from the current.

    Just a thought.

      RE: A5.load()

      Blake,

      There is a speed issue, not that this is ruining my whole day. But if one is continually toggling between a couple of applications it would nice to do so in the most efficient way.

      In principle one could modularize a large application into several smaller ones and switch among them from a menu.

      But mostly, I am slowly working my way through the new methods in Version 5 and I would like to understand how this one functions.

        RE: A5.load()

        Bill,
        As an alternative to switching between apps,I seem to remember a thread started by Tom Henkel that addressed some of this. Selwyn talked about a way of addressing layouts etc not a part of a database and the concept of aliases was also brought up.

          John,

          Thanks for that. I remember the thread and will search under aliases. I am really trying to figure out what all the new methods are for.

            I don't see why. You can do the same thing manually from the controlpanel menu - open a new db w/o explicitly closing the current one first.

            I have a set of command line switches built into the shortcuts I use to start applications. If I use A5.load() to start an application I lose these switches.

            I don't know, but can you do the same thing in the autoexec? Or finagle a way to write/read values to the registry, table or text file?

              RE: A5.load()

              Interesting that this came up. A couple weeks ago, Tom Henkel casually mentioned on the board that he shared data between .adb files.

              Since the topic was about something else, and I didn't want to divert the thread, I e-mailed Tom and we've had several e-mails and a phone call about what he's doing.

              In fact I received permission from Tom to talk about it on the board. I was going to start a topic on it this weekend, but another project interfered.

              The question about all the startup arguments is interesting. I do know he is opening a new .abd without closing the first, and that he passes Add-In variables between databases. Selwyn either helped him with them or designed them for him. They are refernced in the Xbasic manual.

              PS - I think the implications of what he is doing are HUGE. He is coming to Conference and said he will try to bring along something to demonstrate what he's doing. Just remember I have ticket #1.

                BTW, As an test I used Action Scripting to call another database from withing my database. I had started my original one with parameters to hide the splash screen and rename the app (replacing Alpha 5 on Top Window).

                When I did it, the app was still re-named when the second database opened.

                What switches did you want to work when opening the second database?

                  Thanks Tom,

                  My switches would be more or less the same and perhaps supplying a custom icon.

                  I forgot about seeing what action scripting would generate. I'll give that a try and see what happens.

                    Mine did a custom icon also, but splash screen, and icon no longer apply if being called from anothewr datanase. That's wht I checked the Application name, and it did "survive".
