Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Bug: EXIST

Using Exist in the interactive window, the first time seems to work, the second produces an error:

    ?exist("value", "table", "index")
    = .F.

    ?exist("value", "table", "index")
ERROR: The system cannot find the path specified.
    ...\a5\rra5data\contactinfo.dbf

This only appears to occur if "table" isn't open, however, so that's the workaround.

Also EXIST is documented in the wrong place in the Expression Functions Reference.

    Thanks.

I can use the exist function repeatedly in the interactive window with no problem, table open or table closed. In my test, I had a table called "Lookup" with an index called "Stuff". I wanted to check if a value "cat" existed. This is what I got in the interactive, repeatedly

    ?exist("cat","lookup","Stuff")
    = .T.

    ?exist("cat","lookup","Stuff")
    = .T.

I even replaced the value with a variable and ran exist

    value = "cat"
    ?exist(value,"lookup","stuff")
    = .T.

How aboput posting an example where it isn't working.

Ok, the exist function is out of alphabetical order, but the index is right. I had no trouble finding it in the document.

I did what you did and got the results I posted, every single time, with any database, in any combination. It may be one of the many unusual phenomena that seems unique to my particular setup.

I have tried this on WinXP, WinME , and Win98 and have used it for a long time without any problems. It does sound like you have a unique configuration issue. For some reason, some hardware and software configurations have odd problems.

I recently had a function that I had one user test and it failed with a specific error message everytime. I had 3 other people test it in various configurations and I tried it on 4 different computers and operating systems without a problem. I finally found a little glitch that fixed the problem, but I still not sure why the very slight change made any difference. A month or so ago, some users were having a crash problem in a lookup, but samples that crashed repeatedly for myself and others worked perfectly for the testers at Alpha. I know that Alpha made a tremendous effort to find that problem and the problem was eventually found and fixed.

Of course, there is the obvious question. Have you tried the same thing on another computer with a different setup? I have one problem I found that seems limited to one specific build of Win98. Very weird.

That's for sure. My work systems have run some notoriously unstable stuff and yet been stable--well, one for about eight months, and one for a year-and-a-half--except with Alpha 5.

          [snipped story of odd behavior]

I believe such things are inevtiable with Windows, unfortunately. It doesn't exactly reassure one, though.

It seemed like such a simple thing, I didn't, as a matter of fact.

I have two (primary) development machines, one Win98, one Win2K. This only occurs on the Win2K machine. (The Win98 machine has a set of odd A5 behaviors all its own.)
