Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    ToolBar Disable

    I've searched around, but couldn't find much to do with toolbars. I've been doing some experimenting on my own and have came up with the following xbasic code:

    if usergroup="READONLY" then
    tbar=toolbar.open("printtb")
    tbar.controlenable(5,.f.)
    tbar.controlenable(6,.f.)
    end if

    In other words, if I find a user who is in a group called ReadOnly, i don't want him to be able to print. This code loads my created toolbar ("PrintTB") and then disables the Print and Print Setup buttons. The number (5,6) are set to .F. to turn these actions off. The number refers to the icon in line, left to right, on the toolbar.

    So far, so good and this works. I've used it with other toolbars, to stop users in certain groups from accessing certain areas.

    Now the BUT, (Isn't there always a BUT??). When I activate this toolbar, it also turns off the functionality of changing or viewing pages. The page number becomes greyed out and the arrow keys which go from page to page now do not work.

    Has anyone else seen this or am I way out there on a Toolbar limb, so to speak!

    RE: ToolBar Disable

    Well.....I didn't mean to stump everyone...or is it dinner time out there in ForumLand???

    I figured out the answer...which is this:

    I wrote a script to determine if the user belongs in a certain group. Then I gave the user in that group the appropriate toolbar. This means that I had to make up two toolbars - one for the have's and one for the have-nots , but it works. Then I can set the Report's object properties from there.

    Here's the code:

    if usergroup="READONLY" then
    topparent.Toolbar = "PrintTB2"
    else
    topparent.Toolbar = "PrintTB"
    end if

    Funny thing is that the other way works on the forms with no problem, but with the reports suddenly it pops up.

    Oh well...back to work!!!

      RE: ToolBar Disable

      Hi Charles,

      I come across with your posting as I was looking for an answer on the message board on my inquiry about how I could access the User Account Information File. It appears that you have a script here that can identify a usergroup. I wonder how you get the usergroup information. I've been looking for the usergroup and user-account information in my application, but I can't find it yet. Is that stored on a table on something?

        RE: ToolBar Disable

        Gary,

        You may want to look at some of the posts on Security. Here are the "calls" you need for security, although they are not documented (at this point).

        addin.run("assign_db_password_2")
        --->Set Database&Password...
        addin.run("change_master_pwd_test_2") --->Change Master Password...
        addin.run("chg_security_settings_2") --->Change Security Settings...
        addin.run("change_logon_pwd_2") --->Change &Login Password...
        addin.run("remove_master_pwd_test_2") --->Remo&ve Database Password...
        addin.run("customize_logon_dialog_2") --->C&ustomize Logon Dialog...
        addin.run("encrypt_tables") --->&Encrypt/DecryptTables...
        a5_user_groups_dialog() --->Define &Users and Groups...

        In order to run these, you will need to create code around them. Also, Gary, I read your post asking about how to find "What's new.." Check the Alpha5 help at the time of the Alpha screen within the program.

        Please remember that while many enhancements have been made to Alpha5, this still remains a programming language, so you'll need to dig out the manuals and read them. Also, you may find helpful Dr. Wayne's new book on Alpha5 prgramming whcih is available on the Alpha5 website. Readig this will help you immensely.

        Good luck,

        Charlie

          Charlie,

          Thanks a lot. I'll dig into this and I'll try to check the book you mentioned as well.
