How do you assign line item numbers?

In an Alpha Four set where you want to populate a field for line item number (e.g., on an invoice form, you want to number the line items 1, 2, 3, etc.), you could create a default for the line item number field, the default being the expression system->reg_recnum.

In Alpha Five V5, I'm having trouble seeing how you would accomplish this. The set I created has a parent ORDHEAD.dbf and child ITEMS.dbf, but I can't create field rules at the set level, and there is no equivalent to reg_recnum that I can find.

You don't say if you want to number the line items in a browse or a report. Either way, it can be done but you'll need to do just a wee bit of research since I don't have the info quick at hand. Check Dr. Wayne's site, learn alpha.com for article/s on numbering a browse and a report.

Also, do a search on this board and the V4 board for numbering lines in a browse and report. Try using 'number and browse' w/o the ' mark.

Sorry I don't have more time but at least this will get you going in the right direction. Perhaps someone whose used the line numbering methods will respond.

Thanks for the input. First, I am referring to an embedded browse on a form. As each new line item is entered on the browse, I want the line to be numbered. The first would get itemno=1, the second, itemno=2, etc.

Second, I have done this many times in A4 by using the system variable reg_recnum, and because the region was part of a set, I could thereby reference the fact that the numbering was within the parent's domain, such as invoice number.

I will check Dr. Wayne's site, as you suggest.
