Group Break Expressions

I am trying to build a report in which I am showing records from a one to many link. I know I should be able to keep the data such as the parent's table last and first name fields from repeating for every record shown in the child table. I insert a group break using the lastname field as the group break expression, but no matter what I do the last and firstnames from the parent table keep repeating. What am I doing wrong?

If you set the group break up right on the last name field or used an expression like lastname + firstname, It will work.

Tell us how you set up the group break, step by step.

Is the repeating lastname field in the detail section rather than the group header where it should be?

I moved the repeating fields to the group header and this solved the problem. Now the question is, is there anyway to accomplish this in the detail section so as to remove the space between the repeating field(s) and the field from the child table? This is purely an appearance issue I guess. I tried to move all fields into the group header and of course none of them repeated with that setup.

Not sure what you mean but you can move the fields virtually anywhere you want by dragging them hither and yon. Also, the sections can be expanded and contracted by dragging the bottom of the section (when the double arrow appears) up or down. It's all in the mouse.

With a one to many set the typical way to display data is with a header and underneath a detail section sometimes with the detail in a subreport
To do what you want however you could
1) create a one to one set with the child as the parent
2) create a report on that set grouped by the parent with no group header or footer
3) Create a group run_count calc field like:
groupnumb = run_count(trans_id,grp->cust)
This is the key:tells you what record is first in group
4) create a second calc field like:
calcname = If(calc->groupnumb = 1,"cust_name," ")
5) display the calcname in detail section instead of the field cust_name.
