Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Disappearing info

I have an unusual problem. After entering a record and all goes well I will go into that same record and try to add or edit any info to that child portion of the record then as soon as I try to add or edit all info disappears in that child record part of the set. This only happens in the form. If I got the the tables/set tab and bring it up I have no problem. I have tried other forms to that may have the same info in it and have the same problem. Any ideas?

    RE: Disappearing info

Is the form based on a single table or the set? If the set, make sure you have the proper linking field and/or link expression. Also, do you have any code on the form?

Knowing what you can achieve will not become reality until you imagine and explore.

      RE: Disappearing info

The form is based on a set. The child records are a one to many set. All I am doing is going back into that particular record and doing an edit. As I said as soon as I do anything to that record then the info disappears in the child record portion of that record and only in the form.

        RE: Disappearing info

        David,

If you're editing the child table record through a form based on the table, and not through the form based on the set, it's possible to change the link field value, thereby causing the record to no longer be viewable on the set based form when it's later opened up.

If you're editing the child table record through a form based on the set, you should try doing the same edits using the default form for the set. Does the same problem occur there? If not, that suggests there may be a problem in your custom form.

We'll need more details from you in order to assist, I fear. A good way to shortcut this is to post a working copy of your database here, so we can see it. If this is an option, please include instructions (step by step and mouse click by mouse click) on how to trigger the behavior you're reporting.

Thanks Tom for your response. The form is based on the set. To check I have looked to make sure that the link which is the invoice number is that same and it is. Whenever I go directly into the set at the tables/set tab I have no problem. By the way this behavior happens in more than one form based on that particular set. My database currently isnt huge but it isnt small either. I will see what I can work out.

                David,

Two of the files in your zip file were corrupted somewhere along the way and could not be extracted.

I could not find any instructions from you explaining how to see the specific problem you're describing

Your set contains 4 child tables and 1 grandchild table.

Your database contains a number of forms based on the set.

Which form are you having trouble with?
                Which child record?
What keystrokes or mouseclicks do we have to supply to be able to see the problem you're reporting?

I am sorry Tom. Try this again if you would. I left just the one form and you will see what I mean. If you go to the warranty calls form and try to edit some of the fields such as service performed or trouble reported you will see the info disappear. Thanks for your help.

                    RE: Disappearing info

                    David,

Try moving the Appliance table fields off the conditional object, and then remove the conditional object from your form. This seems to solve the problem here.

I notice the form's filter expression matches the condition expression. I notice that the conditional object has only a single condition expression. Not sure whether either is significant to the problem you're seeing. Since the conditional object's sole condition matches the form's filter expression, the sole condition will always apply. Thus, the conditional object serves no purpose on this form. So I removed it, and discovered that the data entry problem you describe no longer occurs.

                    Hope this helps.

If you have other forms with more complex conditional objects, you might search for message threads discussing conditional objects and child tables or sets.

Thanks Tom, I will look into it. I had changed the conditional area because of circumstances but later deleted some. Again, thanks.
