Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Multi-Select List Box

    Using the X-Dialog Genie...

The "Tip" says..."To create a multi-column control, use an expression that uses a pipe character ("|")between columns.

See the attached screen-shot for what I am talking about.

I've done this several different ways with the pipe between the field names, for example...

    field1|field2
    field1 "|" field2
    =field1|field2
    =field1 "|" field2
    field1+|+field2
    field1+ "|" +field2

but none of them work. I either get an error or in the case of the field1+"|"+field2, the | simply appears as part of the text in the single column that is produced.

What is the proper syntax to create multiple columns ?

Thanks for any help that can be offered!

        Daniel,

Thanks for your help on the multi-select list box.

The solution was to turn on the advanced formatting AND the use alternating row colors option. In your sample, if you turn these off, the problem comes back. I wonder if Alpha really meant to do it that way...

Do you know how to specify a return value for the dialog?

        Thanks again,

        Louis

"The solution was to turn on the advanced formatting AND the use alternating row colors option. "
you can't turn off the advanced formatting but you could not use alternating row colors option. Its obvious that the "|" is meaningless with out the formatting

"Do you know how to specify a return value for the dialog?"
i use the "substr" and "stritran" etc. functions

          enjoy

            Louis,

In Daniels example, the variable "invlist" is a crlf delimited string with each line being the whole line for each record including the formating code which would have to be stripped out.

Attached is a slightly different approach to get the column effect with a vertical line. This isn't my code, but modified from something Selwyn posted. Import the text file into a script and see the two different results.

In order to get a return value of only one of the fields (if its used for a table) you still need to use the stripping functions

                  RE: Multi-Select List Box

Version 5 made big strides toward making coded fields a viable option. They need to take the next step.

I assume the primary need for returning a second column in a MSLB is because the field is coded. (You want to select the decoded text, but return the code)

This is important enough (and basic enough) that you should be able to do it with Action Scripting.

                    RE: Multi-Select List Box

                    Tom,

                    You're close.

What I am actually trying to do is...

                    1. Allow the user to make multiple selections in a single interface.

                    2. Give the user the ability to discriminate between similar values. For example, if the user needs to select multiple names, and several people in the list have the same last name, showing the user the first name and address in an additional columns will help them differentiate between the choices.

                    3. Return the value of only one of the columns (and do so without all of the formatting info we see in a multi-select list box) or better yet any field in the record at the table level (like we can do now with the Record List List Box and the Record List [Edit] Combo Boxes), but do so for each row selected by the user.

In my mind, the perfect solution would be for Alpha to create a new object type. It would be called something like...Multi-Select Record ListBox with the option of flagging it as a Multi-Select Record List Check Box and with the added attributes of the Advanced Formatting features we see today in the Multi-Select List Box such as automatic row numbering, alternating row colors and so on.

Who knows, maybe this is possible now, Alpha5 is so rich I could have easily looked right past it. If not, and if your're reading this Selwyn...

                      RE: Multi-Select List Box

Couldn't agree more. Your scenario would work for coded fields (select decoded values but codes get returned) also.

Need it available through AS and available for queries, operations, etc.
