Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha licenses terms?

I'd been under the impression that the 3/5 user packs meant 3/5 users could simultaneously use Alpha 5 (or a Alpha 5 hosted database), even if more than 3/5 copies of the software are installed on the network.

I hope that's correct since that's what I told the client for whom I'm developing an app (I thought I'd be finished before the 30 day trail expired--oh well).

I can't find an explanation of the license terms anywhere on the AlphaSoftware website.

I just installed build patch 1389/1027, and happened to open the same database in a second instance of Alpha on the same computer and got an "exceeded license count" error. I hope this just means the trial download software is a single SIMULTANEOUS user license.

And, the 3/5 user packs mean SIMULTANEOUS users.

Please confirm/correct my understanding, and if possible guide me to a written explanation of the Alpha 5 license terms.

    Thanks,
    Hasan

    P.S.

I spend half a day in 'embedded subform hell' until I installed this patch... THANKS for the regular patch releases.

Knowing what you can achieve will not become reality until you imagine and explore.

I had read that work-around VERY carefully but I couldn't get it to work for me... the patch was just in time.

      thanks

        Hasan,

        Maybe I'm wrong....

It sounds like you are developing an application for a client.

If that's the case you wouldn't purchase the 3pak/5pak versions of Alpha Five. These are FULL versions intended for 3 to 5 "developers" to use at one time (e.g. on a network).

        What you probably need are:
One FULL version... the one you develop Alpha Five applications with.

Then, when you are ready to deploy your application:
A RUN-TIME version suitable for the number of users your client requires (5, 10, 20, or unlimited).

Plus your code, of course. :)

        Regards,
        --Bob

            Hasan,

Bob is correct and you should not be using an acronym like
rt_m. He was offering you good advice, and a reply like that is an insult to him and certainly does not entice others who you may need to help you in the future.

Yes, pg 16 of the user manual provides information about activating A5, but activation is only required on for the Developer editions, be they single, 3, 5 pack or otherwise.

Had you followed your own advice, you would see that on the bottom of pg. 20 it says.

"Activation is not required with the Alpha Five Runtime."

The only reason you would need to install a developer version at the client site is if you needed to provide them access to be able to modify the code. The following is stated about the runtime.

"Ideal for selling applications that you have developed in Alpha Five and for easy deployment to many users within an organization who need access but not development rights.

NOTE: You will need a licensed copy of Alpha Five in order to create the application that is to be distributed"

            I hope that clarifies things.
