Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha terminates after pressing f8

I hope someone can help here. About a week ago there was a post from Patti Post requesting a consultant in the Buffalo area.

I have been trying to help her out over email but have only corrected part of her problem. I would like to continue with this problem but will be out of the contry for a week.
Please see the attached screen shot this is the error that she gets. The following is an email that she sent to me explaining the problem. I think she is starting to get some pressure from her boss over doing the upgrade to v5 and messing up the application. Any help is appreciated.

Subject: Re: Need Alpha5 Consultant in Bflo

    > Hi Rick,
    > Thank you for responding. Our particular problem that is critical is the
f8 toggle button between forms and browse. All of a sudden on Friday it has
stopped working properly. In a particular form for our archived/closed
records going back a few years, when you want to browse after querying the
records it going to the default browse instead of the customised browse that
it is attached to. I jsut upgraded to v5 last week monday, on Thursday I got
us using alpha directly out of v5 and then come friday morning the f8 toggle
for forms and browse is giving us a termination error after bringing up the
default browse. Go figure. Part of me thinks it is teh upgrade and part of
me is very boggled. We just need it fixed. WE live in this area of the
program, amongst others and we cannot figure it out.

RE: Alpha terminates after pressing f8

    Hi Rick.....

Typically pressing F8 should not cause an unhandled exception, at least it doesn't for me. I think that you need more information, obviously something is causing this to happen. I think that you would need to look at the files to see if you can find the root of the problem. If you get the files & you cant duplicate the problem on your computer, I would start looking at what version / build that the client is using. If this wasn't a problem before but now it is something has changed, and at best it would be very difficult to figure out without all of the information being made avaliable.

    good luck

I have had this problem, as well, but only with my laptop. On my development machine and on my client's machine it hasn't occured. Has led me to wonder if it is a video driver issue.

Okay - I can duplicate the error, FAIRLY consistently, even on my development machine.

It has to do with how many times I use the F8, like it was a stack overflow problem.

as far as i can tell, this particular bug pops up every time one tries to go to the default browse from a form opened as a dialog form. one workaround, until alpha fixes it, is to design a new form that has a browse in it, and then instead of pressing {f8}, the user can press a button to see the browse.

            I can definitely verify this:

with a form, opened normal, using a named browse, where the named browse is the companion browse for the form, toggling repeatedly will irregularly cause a forced termination - unhandled exception.
