Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Bulk import in a CSV format

    Hello

I am importing just over 400,000 records from a text file and it is incredibly slow is this normal. Data transfer is about 100 records ever 5 seconds

John, do you have an Excel "icon" for the csv files on your system?

I am importing CSV files, but on the systems I am currently using, they have an Excel icon, and I am, via xbasic, open and saving them as Excel 4.0 and then importing them as Excel data. I don't know if this would be faster, but would be glad to share the code with you.

        John:

It sounds like someyhing else is going on. Imports normally fly. The size of the input file should not have the impact you are experiencing.

I import larger files very quickly using the import operation and xbasic.

can you post the routine and a subset of the file.

When you say an excel icon do you mean the program or something else. If it is excel the program I have it.

RE: Bulk import in a CSV format

What I mean is that the CSV files on the system where I get them display an Excel icon instead of a Text icon in the folders where they reside. I think in my case the reason for that is that the CSV files come from a web server where I think that the sending program saves them from an Excel "Web Page" as CSV, and display with Excel based icons.

I would try Bob's suggestion, though, and post the routine, especially as he regularly imports files even larger.

              Hello Robert

              Here's the data base

Its a very simple structure I export to another database after the initial import.

My problem lies with the initial import from the text document in CSV format

Does the receiving table have any field rules which are being evaluated as each new record is entered to the table? -- tom

When I have done this in the past all has gone well. I usually import around 100K at a time. This is my first attempt at 400K.

Now when I do the smaller import the same problem happens, very slow data transfer

The speed you experience isn't normal. Usually, calculated or other field rules are the culprit. Just remove the field rules, run the import and then put 'em back.

No its a simple table with no updating going on

All it does is imports from a CSV document into a table with 8 fields

No field rules no operations, nothing

I created a new import operation and it worked flawlessly. 10 seconds process time for 400K records

                        Thanks for all input
