Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Why does A5V5 think tables or form are open?

I'm having a consstant problem with A5V5 telling me that a table or form is in use by another or can not be opened in exclusive mode. I've rebooted several times and get the same message even though the table or form has never been oped or used since I booted up. This is a real problem. I never had this in 4.5

RE: Why does A5V5 think tables or form are open?

Without knowing the configuration of your database and the sequence of events that lead to a form being opened, it is not possible to answer the question with any accuracy. If the program is giving the message, the form or table has been opened somewhere in you code, perhaps in an autoexec script or on startup. If the database with all tables is not large, you could zip it up with most data removed and post it and someone can take a look at the problem.

      FGred,

Do you have a set? Is the link set to referential integrity? The following is a response by Selwyn re this issue.

You also might want to try a search if this is not the solution.

      File:

      edit your set
turn off referential integrity between the parent table and "team_a" and the parent table and "team_b".

one-one linked tables are really "lookup" tables and it does not make sense typically to cascade a change in the parent key to the child table.

take alphasports for example. in the invoice.set
invoice_header is linked one-one to customer.

if invoice_header has customer_id of (say) 000001, that might link to a customer called "sinclair"

if i then changed the customer_id in invoice_header to 000002, i would typically intend to link that invoice to AMOTHER customer. I WOULD NOT intend to change the customer id for "sinclair" in the customer table from "000001" to "000002"

      TYVM :) kenn

Knowing what you can achieve will not become reality until you imagine and explore.

Thanks ken, But this is a simple database with a menu form that opens either a single browse or form. The problem right noe id that it wont even open the form Main Menu. How can it keep telling me that its open when I know that is not and I get this message even after I reboot the machine.

RE: Why does A5V5 think tables or form are open?

The problem is the table that I created back in 4.5 to base my Menu form on. There are no records in it and it has only one field. Each time I try to restructure or pack it it gives me the same message that it is in use. This to me is a real bug in the program when the program cant tell if a table is open por not.

For some reason the form is open if you are getting the message. Why, is the question. Can you zip up and post the database or the menu table? That would be a big help.

Thanks again Jerry, I deleteed the table and created a new one then recreated the Menu and it worked. This application haas 16 tables, all seperate attached to the menu form. In the transition all converted great except for the main table which the menu waas based on and 2 of the forms. In the future I'm going to creat any of my old applications from scratch instaed of moving them to A5. Thanks for all your help. There is still a problem that Selwyn said that they would fix on the next paatch that allows users of the runtime access to the control panel.

                Fred

Glad you have the problem solved. It is rare that the transition gives any trouble. It is possible that the table data dictionary became corrupted for some reason. The conversion from v4.5 to v5 has been heavily tested by many users. There have been a few problems, but I would not hesitate to try a database built in an older version in V5. The best process is to make a copy of the database, tables, and all support files in a different directory and open the copy in v5. If there is a problem, you still have the originals that can be opened in v4.5 for testing.
