Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Update expressions Freeze program

Using build 1026 Intermittent problem with expression builder freezing at various points within an expression or at completion of expression. Happening 50 - 60 % of the times tried. When it happens mouse clicks and keybaord strokes are not accepted. Must end task to close program and restart. Problem is with more than one table. I am attaching files of table where problem most recently occured.
Sample expression that fails is an update of ->Full_address
    alltrim(substr(Full_address,at(",",Full_address)+2))
As noted the freeze may occur at any point within the expression or while evaluating the completed expression.

    RE: Update expressions Freeze program

    Gary,

I'll take a stab at this.

I'm kind of surprised that A5 is evaluating your expression at all.

The reason I say that is that you didn't tell the Substr() function how many characters you want it to grab.

You tell it the starting point using the AT() function, then you add 2 to that number. But you need to define the second paramenter.

    Something like:

    ALLTRIM(Substr(Full_Address,at(",",Full_address)+2,(at(",",Full_address,2)-at(",",Full_address)-2)))

    should get you started.

It looks to me like your trying to parse the Full_address field into Address, City, State and ZIP

The problem you gonig to have is that the data isn't delimited (with commas) exactly the same in every record.

Some record have two sets of commas, some three, and at least one has 4.

You may need to parse the data by working from the right and moving toward the left, using the rat() function.

Do ZIP first, State second, City third, etc.

      forgot to mention.

You may want to first count the number of comma's in each full_address field by using the Occurs() function.

Then using a Case() or IF() define expressions, along with the AT()/RAT() function locate the positions of the commas and parse your data that way.

        Vince

Actually the substr() function only needs a starting point, which is generated by the at() function. To quote the expressions manual:

"If you omit the NumberOfCharacters parameter, SUBSTR returns the right portion of the CharacterString beginning at the StartingPosition."

I tried his expression with his table in the expression builder and it works everytime. The questions that I have are what happens if at() returns 0 or the Full_address value is blank. I didn't test that. That situation should be trapped in the expression.

          Jerry,

Thanks for the clarification on the Substr(). All this time I thought the second paramater was required.

Good to know. Thanks for the info.

I also did not get A5 or the expression builder to lock up.

Actually, eventually I did get what I needed in each field from the Full_address field , however, it probably took me five or more attempts for each update. If it never failed for both of you I am not sure where to direct my attention. Can it hurt to go back to build 1024, since I never had the problem there, see if it happens and if not put 1026 back in just to see ?
Thanks to you both for looking into this.
