Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    design time!

Does any body know or has anybody used a method or add-in to records the time (lapsed) between an applications Edit on and Edit off mode, which also accumulates to a total?

Would be fascinating to know the real time spent designing an application pen, paper & a clock is one option but hey, were in the 21st century!

    RE: design time!

    Hi Andy,

I once downloaded a small VB app that was just like a stop watch only with an input for hourly pay rate. Hit start and it would clock the time and compound what you earned by the second. Really cool or really depressing depending on your pay scale.

Might be an interesting project for someone

      RE: design time!

You could create a simple table w. 4 fields:
      Date
      Time_IN
      Time_Out
      Diff

Just add a button to record the time for in/out and make the diff field be a calc. Create a report w. group break based upon date to get the day total, and/or form calc field that totals the date's time. It's not 100% automatic by any means, but it is simple to implement. Anyway, if your tracking your development time, there is a lot more to development than being in edit mode, right?

        RE: design time!

        Hello Andy,

I do this with a little time clock table and form I can add into any application. However, I just open the form and press the start button, and when I'm finish, reopen the form and log out. You certainly could do this automatically by defining routines to run whenever a database was opened and closed.

However, if I am tracking my time for billing purposes, just because the database is opened, really doesn't mean that I am actively working on it. I might be away on an extended coffee break :-)

The time clock table and form allow one to clock in and out as many times as you wish. The problem with this approach is that you must push the buttons........... something, for whatever reasons, I seem to have trouble with :0

          RE: design time!

          HI,
Design mode is just one element your're right but it helps if you can reduce the need to think about it whilst thinking of other elements in designing an application.

            Hi
What about adding a in-active key/mouse function, similar to a screen saver timer activation? It has its pro's and con's but it would help with those coffee breaks!
