Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

i am using the month table as the parent the day of the week as the child and the day table as the grand child

i am hoping to be able to have the months duplicate as the years pass on and i am sure i need to put a date field in there somewhere not sure where though

any help would be greatly appreicated this will probally be my biggest task so far and im hoping for good results

    RE: CALENDAR

    Hi Brian

I have been using a calendar shcedule app that I built for over 3 years back in the 4.5 days. I have converted it to V5 with very few changes. Enough about me. There are some good examples of Schedule and Calendar apps in www.learn alpha.com and the is an ActiveX example that Selwyn helped me with in Code Archive. There is no need to build a Calendar, just use what is there in the way you want to control your data. I will be pleased to help you with your App.

      RE: CALENDAR

      Thanks Keith for replying

I downloaded the application from the archives and when i try to open the diary i get an error in KERNEL32.DLL and alpha will now close ive tryed restarting and loading again with no luck.

The reason i was wanting a calendar was because we schedule the whole month at the begining of the month
and it is easy to see whats open and what we can fit in if we see the whole month in front of us Any Ideas?

If I was to try do make a calendar application should i use one table for it all. would this make it faster?

Thanks again for replying and i look forward to your response

        RE: CALENDAR

If you're handy w. xbasic (I think you have to be to write a calendar)...

My preferred method is to have a table with your items based upon date & time, So the fields are date, time, item, etc. Then create a form that looks like a calendar with text objects. Each day can have 10 or more line-item blank text objects that get filled w. data from the table using a script. The only problem w. this method is, that you can't print a monthly calendar based upon a form. You can create a 2nd table, however, and read the data into it to create a special monthly printable calendar. See www.learn alpha.com for a bunch of different articles on various calendar designs, including the latter suggestion of a printable monbthly calendar.

          RE: CALENDAR

          Brian,

First can you create a form with an ActiveX calendar on it? If you cannot then that could be why you got the error message. Attached is a screen shot of the ActiveX Calendar with a browse, notice the browse if filtered to match the date selected on the calendar. The other calendars that Peter and I have mentioned in learn alpha.com can show much the same thing but have been created in Xbasic. Hope this helps a bit more.

            RE: CALENDAR

In scenarios like this, what I do is this:
build a parent table (via an xbasic routine)that has one record for each day of the month

            like
            Field 1 = "January"
            Field 2 = 01/01/2003

then create a child that has any number of fields, but the critial-linking field is field 2 from above

now, if you scroll in the parent it would show you all "orders" for that day in the child
and, as previously suggested, you have a field

            date+time

you can sort the child on that field and it would display in time-of-day fashion

you could periodicall tell the "make-a-calendar" routine to make "parents" for the months of
            2003, 1-12
            2004, 1-12
            etc.

              RE: CALENDAR

              Keith,
              try this:
in the acticvex calendar activx event for
              NewMonth and NewYear
              put this or the equivalent
              dim gpd1 as d
              gpd1=activex1.activex.valueget()
              ui_msg_box("","" + gpd1)

when you change months and or years the calendar value does not get updated

I haven't yet been able to find a workaround for this

ordinarily this would not be an issue, but for some of my clients, with operators with limited pc knowledge, it is

so I put my own buttons for this at the top of my calendar

                RE: CALENDAR

                Martin,

Thank you for telling me about that. I had only put in a small amount of data and that seemed to update when I pressed any date, but I can see now that the data in the browse does not get refreshed if I change the month but waits untill I press a date again. Do you know what all the other functions are in the ActivexEvent?

                  RE: CALENDAR

well, in THEORY the name should be fairly self descriptive,

enclosed is a little program where I have experimented a great deal with the activex calendar, and have add changemonth/year controls at the top

you can check all my event scripts

the form to look at, though, is
                  "DtRgBusn"
