Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Unable to Open Set

    The following line of code has worked for years in A5V4, A5V5 claims it can't find it. Has the format changed in v5?

    tblrsum = table.open("reftoavl.set")

    Where am I going wrong?

    RE: Unable to Open Set

    Hi Philip....

    The only thing I can see is that you don't have the path to the set included with the table.open() statment.

    If the set that you are wanting to open is in the same folder as the current database then try something like this....

    path=A_DB_CURRENT_PATH
    tblrsum = table.open(path+"reftoavl.set")

    good luck

      Nope that did not work either. I will keep trying different combinations...

        RE: Unable to Open Set

        Is A5 not allowing sets to be opened. While changing the code to try and find a solution, I am given the option to use the Ctrl-down arrow key to show tables to open. NO SETS were displayed. Does this mean that we cannot open sets because they are not being displayed in this list?

          RE: Unable to Open Set

          I moved the set below two other tables to see if the problem occurs with the other tables. Nope...the tblavail and tblvar open with no problems. A5 comes back and says that the reftoavl cannot be found. All the tables and set are in the SAME folder.

          tblavail = table.open("availsht")
          tblvar = table.open("variables")
          tblrsum = table.open("reftoavl.set")

          HELP...this is getting frustrating...

            Philip,

            In Vers 4 of Alpha Five, the table.open() method will not open a set if any of the tables in the set are already open in the current session. Check the docs in the Xbasic Ref. Manual to confirm that this is still true in Vers. 5. My guess is that this is what's preventing the set from opening for you now.

              Tom,
              I had already created a DUMMY table to eliminate that problem. I still get the same results. I have attached a jpg of the error message.

              Thanks

                Phillip,

                Using alphasports I was able to open the invoices set with a button on the reports menu. Even though successful, the sets in the database did not show up in the command help when pressing control/down for help. Are you by any chance trying to open the set from a form based on any table in the set?

                  Philip,

                  Have you exited Alpha Five, rebooted, and tried again? This would clear any open instances of the table about which you may be unaware.

                    RE: Unable to Open Set

                    I got it to work and I have my theories. I went ahead and attached the script to a button on a new form attached to a dummy table. This table only has one field. I restarted a5 and the script ran flawlessly.

                    Before I had the script attached to the set that I was having problems. The sequence was that I closed the form for the set in question, opened this dummy form and attempted to run the script as part of the action scripting. My theory is that the set was still active although I had closed the form for the set. By activating this dummy form and having to click on a button was enough to be sure that the set was closed. If I am correct, then why did A5 come back with a not found error. The error should have been "set already opened" or something like that.

                    Thanks for the help, I will modify things to continue on with the development.

                      RE: Unable to Open Set

                      Philip,

                      As explained in the docs I referenced earlier:

                      Code:
                      The .open() method will fail if you try to open a set, and any of the tables in
                      the set are already open. This is because Alpha Five assumes that the aliases for
                      all of the tables in the set will be the same as the table names. If, however, one of
                      the tables in the set is already open in the session, the table name will have
                      already been assigned as the alias name to the open table.
                      Alpha can't open the set because the alias for the table cannot be found. Why? because it's in use already. Remember, when the same table is opened multiple times, each instance gets a unique name (alias). The Customer table, opened three times in a row creates 3 alias's:

                      Customer
                      Customer1
                      Customer2

                      when the set tries to open, the effort forces alpha Five to use the next available alias name, but that doesn't match the table name in the set specs. Customer1 is not the same as Customer. So Alpha dutifully reports it cannot find Customer.

                      Make sense?

                        Yes it all makes sense now. Although does a table remain open throughout the action scripting even though you had closed the form that had opened the table in a previous action?

                          RE: Unable to Open Set

                          Philip,

                          I don't know. To me, it's dangerous to start a script running from an object on a form (like a button), and then have that same script close that same form. I fear the script will lose its moorings if the form and all of its objects disappears. The context in which a script runs is vital, and closing the form jeopardizes the integrity of the context, or so it seems to me. Your experience suggests perhaps that the context is preserved while the script continues to run, but I'd rather not have to worry about this possibility. So, to keep it simple, I never close the form until the script has finished its work. Windows is complicated enough without taking chances, or so it seems to me.
