Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

New Addin for A5v5 - Ad Hoc View

    New

New 'Ad Hoc View' Addin Available
    for A5V5
A new Addin for Alpha Five V5 has just been released. The "Ad Hoc View" addin
allows you to quickly open a browse or a form view on any table or set, showing
just selected fields and selected records. Alpha Five creates a temporary
layout. When you close the Ad Hoc view, the temporary layout is deleted, and
your Control Panel does not get cluttered up.
'Ad Hoc View' is available now for the ludicrous
    price of just $9.95.

to purchase the 'Ad Hoc View' Addin

Features of Ad Hoc View include:

Create ad hoc Browse and Form views
Specify filter and sort criteria either before,
or after opening the ad hoc view
Works for both Tables and Sets
Print or E-mail the ad hoc view -- in this way the ad hoc
view works like a quick and simple ad hoc report
Fully integrated into Alpha Five - a new item
appears on the menu when you right-click on a Table or Set in the Control
    Panel.
Can be used in Xbasic scripts
Can be used by Developers to give customers and
ad hoc view of their data.

Here is how Ad Hoc View works:
    1. Right click on any Table or Set. See the new menu
    item - 'Ad Hoc Browse'.

    2. Select the 'Ad Hoc Browse' and the following dialog appear:

    3. Choose the fields that you want in the ad hoc view.
If you want a Form view rather than a Browse, view, click the Form push-button
(see Layout Type:). Then, click OK and your Ad-hoc view appears:

RE: New Addin for A5v5 - Ad Hoc View

Purchased & downloaded AHV, install failed "You have Build 1381, you need to install latest Build." As far as I know, I have the latest build. 1381-1024.

Sorry, I looked in the Announcements and didn't see a new build, then just noticed it in the message section. Guess I have to spend another 45 minutes downloading.

When a new build is installed, do we need to 're-install' the add-in(s)?

no, you don't. the addins are just .aex files in the addins_installed folder.

              Selwyn,

I had the adhocbrowse you created previously working 100% from a button on a custom toolbar. This new addin work great - except how do I get it to work from a button on a toolbar? I can't seem to find the key.

                Disregard. I found the answer.

This asking questions first is getting old.

                  Selwyn,

                  Just purchased it...very nice!

I will get alot of use out of this handy add-in.

In my opinion, this is a great help to those of us who dislike Access, but feel a little envious of it's handy query grid.

                  Thanks!

                    Hi all,

Would someone please explain some of the uses of this feature. Like how it would be useful, where it should be used, and any other examples of its use.

                    Thanks ...

                      Hello Gary,

Well, I'll try and explain how I use it.

It's useful when you have a data mining type application, where your types of queries and reports may change from day to day.

In my case we analyze Navy submarine repair part allowances.

My query and report criteria are usually predicated on some type of trouble report or request by a customer, or a sailor reporting a problem with support. These requests vary quite a bit.

                        Gary:
I am hoping to give the users the ability to create browses and print simple lists(full or runtime) without me having to write a new report everytime they want to see a new field or in a different order.

They might be able to create some of their own without changing my program.

                            Gary,

I use adhoc browses mostly to troubleshoot. It's a useful way to find a bum record. Or, if I'm restructuring a table or doing a global update, it's a quick & handy way to check values and find problems, etc. In v.4.5 and earlier you could delete columns from a default browse (in other words, temporarily get rid of irrelevant data cluttering the screen). For reasons know only to the gods, you can no longer do this. Anyway, adhoc browses approach this problem from another direction. Pretty cool, I think.

                              Gary,

One of my clients is the Human Resources section of a health care agency. On a regular basis other people want a list of employees that meet certain criteria - like everyone with a license (professional organization issued, state issued, etc) that expires during the next month, or non-professional employees who are due a certification/recertification exam during the next x number of days.

All of the above are best created as ad hoc browses when requested, since the parameters and required fields are rarely the same from request to request.

I have 'standard' reports for my client, but in an effort to keep the number of reports reasonable, the ad hoc (on demand) browse is the answer. The tradeoff you have to consider is between standard reports and browses and on-demand user created browses, which really are the same as a report.

I hope this gives you some small idea as to their use.
