Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Menu Min/Max/Restore Icon and Buttons Missing

    Greetings everybody..

    I have two Forms (Menu Main and Menu Inventory) that are both using the same special Menu on top .. cleanedup up to just allow the "Window manipulations icon" and a "close" and one other play item, "".

    The .jpg of both are included, and you will notice that Menu Inventory is lacking the menu icon that allows you to Restore, Minimize, Maximize or Next (dunno what that is) the form..
    This icon, and the famous three min/max/close buttons, are in Menu Main but they are not in Menu Inventory, yet they have the same entriesin the Forms Properties

    FormDesign/FormProperties/Menu-Toolbars have the same custom Menu ..

    The four FormProperties/Window boxes are checked, Sizable, System Menu, Minimize and Maximize, in both..

    Can anybody figure a reason why the icon and the three boxes are not showing in Menu Inventory..

    Perhaps I am missing someting trivial :-) but it doesn't seem trivial yet ...

        If both forms have exactly the same properties, and both use the same menu and toolbar, you should see the same information. Does this occur all of the time? What happens if you close A5 and reopen?

        I seem to remember a situation that caused this effect, but I will have to research the details. As I remember it, it didn't happen all of the time and only under a specific sequence of screen operations. If you are seeing this all of the time, then you need to research the form properties more closely.

          RE: Menu Min/Max/Restore Icon and Buttons Missing

          Ok, now when I am in Menu Inventory it is working ok, when it goes into full Maximize mode, the icon and boxes reappear
          (after an earlier reboot)
          =======
          I am going to use the following terminology
          Full Maximize - Form attached to the Taskbar, using Taskbar min/max/close buttons
          Restore - Form under the Taskbar, uses own buttons

          (This might be poor terminology if a Restore is supposed to sometimes "restore" to full Maximize, if so, tell me some good terminology and I will use it in the future..)

          (btw, that icon is not supposed to be there in "Restore" Mode, that is an understandable Alpha decision it seems)

          =======================================================
          This leads to the other question..

          It seems hard to fully control how a form will open up, even a maximize window command sometimes ends up in "Restore" mode....

          I want some forms to always open in Full Maximize, and others to open up in "Restore" (under the taskbar) mode all the time.. (leaving aside the question of the size of the restore for now)

          Is this supposed to be accomplished by the difference between "Restore" a Window vs. "Maximize" a window,

          If so, am I correct that it is less than 100% reliable?

          And if so, is there a way to make it 100% reliable ?

            Here are a couple of ides that come to mind:

            1. be sure you aren't opening the second form as a dialog
            2. also, if you used action scripting to open the form from a button, you may have told it to open the form as a dialog
            3. check the form properties to be sure it isn't set to be opened as a dialog

              Good ideas, I haven't set any forms as dialogs yet except little small action scripting error dialogs :-)

              Now I more interested in the second part of my question, perhaps this has been discussed, how to distincify and get 100% Full Maximize (locked to the taskbar) vs. Restore (under the taskbar) opening

              Am I missing something trivial in Forms Window 101 here ?

                That said I couldn't find where in properties it might say that it is in Dialog Mode, so I opened an unused form in Dialog Mode to see what happens.. I notice it comes up without a ToolBar or Menu at all, a whole new experience :-)

                =================
                Also, in Action Scripting,
                I noticed that when you go back and change the Form Name, it doesn't update the Comment to show the changed Form Name
                "Script Genie, Open a Form as a Dialog Box"

                (very minor gitch for Alpha)

                More important, can we get those comment s off the bottom and to the right where you can see all the Action Scripting comments at one time..?

                  Steven

                  The problem is Forms Windows 101 by Micro.... This form size issue has been discussed a number of times on the forum. The problem is the way Windows operates, not Alpha. If you maximize a form, then all other forms will open maximized (other than dialogs). If you change one form to restore size, then all forms will open restore size.

                  If you want some things to look maximized and some restore size, you have a couple options. You can open most forms maximized and then open the ones you want smaller as dialogs. As you point out, dialogs don't have menus and toolbars, so that is a limitation.

                  Another option is to fake it, which is what I normally do. I open everything in restore size. Here is how to get a similar effect as maximize.

                  1. Go to form properties, window, and unselect all of the window style options. Remove any caption in the box
                  2. On the form OnActivate event, put the following

                  topparent.restore()
                  topparent.window_position("fill","fill")

                  (see page 165 of the xbasic manual for more info)

                  3. Before you save the form, be sure you have some way to close the form, since all of the windows standard icons on the top right will be gone for the form. I usually include a close and minimize option on a custom toolbar, but a button on the form will work.

                  Now open the form. It will fill the A5 window and appear maximized.

                  Another option is to reset each form's size in the OnActivate event with

                  topparent.maximize()

                  or

                  topparent.restore()

                  The problem with this is that the forms will be very jumpy and when the form on top goes to restore size, so will any forms underneath. (Thank you Micro....)

                      Jerry.. great info, and concise,
                      I will try it all out..

                      I am not trying to keep a lot of Windows open at a time,
                      so that may help on issues like shaking..

                      ===================================================
                      Surprised that Windows, after 10 years, can't even allow the basics ... this is simply the Windows usage for one single maximized app, after all..

                      So I guess that the others, Delphi, Access, Filemaker, must have similar Windowing problems (unless Borland can somehow overwrite or modify or bypass the Windows internals .. how are those antitrust suits going ?.. Does Access use tricks ? hmmm or does it have the same situation?

                      How about Linux KDE, Xopen whatover, do they have this down pat better. ?

                      ==========================================================
