Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Alpha Evaluating Non-Running Part of Script?

Well sometimes I am working on a script and want to leave the code in for later and put a Condition that is false for some actions..
    e.g. Condition 1=2

I just had a situation where Alpha gave me an error msg, on just such a line, something like...
"Invalid characters at end of Expression"

When I removed that part of the Script, deleted it, all ran fine... meaning that it seems like Alpha was evaluating/playing with the syntax at execution time even though the code was branched over...

If this is the case, I would like to ask Alpha to save some time and move-on :-) don't evaluate or syntax check code at runtime that you will not execute..

Has anyone else noticed this behaviour ..
    Thoughts ? Should I document it ?

The Action itself was a "branch command".. for now I decided to do my branching with simply GoTo and label :-)

    Thanks

If you don't want a line of code to execute, you must preceed it with a ' . However, if the line of code is withing some % characters, the ' will not work, youl hafe to delete the code.

Knowing what you can achieve will not become reality until you imagine and explore.

The bottom line is, your script had errors and wouldn't compile. If you wanted the error checking to check errors just in branches that executed, it would take much longer, since the script would have to be executed silently. If you don't want it to be evaluated, just put it in as a comment. That's what programmers from all walks of life have been doing since there were programmers.

Thanks.. ok.. that all seems reasonable..

I guess I thought of XBasic more as an interpreter or control language than compiled.. in which case it would only have a problem when it actually "hit" an error... unless there was a special syntax checking mode..... if it is compiled or quasi-compiled, then of course it all makes sense...

And compilation would at least be a first step toward evemtually having a whole app compiled .. (a whole nother matter to ask Alpha about :-)

btw, is there a simple line that ends an Xbasic script, so you don't have to officially comment anything below that line ?
(embarrassed to ask such a question :-)

END will end your running script. This still won't stop the rest of the script from being checked for errors however. Comments are the way to go.
