IF THEN ELSE in A5V5

I have been trying to configure an xbasic script to fill a field from one of 3 other field values. A choice field is set to select the appropriate field. I�m using the �if then else� statement:

IF choice3 THEN selection =field3
END IF

I can�t seem to get the field to accept this script� I think syntax is correct, fields are valid, logical expression followed by statement. Any suggestions?

Sid, in addition to what Lenny says, you may need to modify the script further depending upon the context in which you're running the script.

If choice is a field in your table, and there's an object named choice on your form, then you could more refer to the value in that value by referencing the table, or by referencing the object on the form. However, the syntax is different.

tablename->choice

vs.

parentformname:choice.value

The first problem is that ELSE IF is two words, not one. The second problem is that the code following the if/else if should start on a new line. FYI, the word "THEN" is optional. I leave it out, as it doesn't make add anything to the readability of the code.

IF choice3 THEN
selection = field3
END IF

I just did a test and discovered that ELSEIF and ELSE IF behave the same. Learn something new every day. However, the if statement/condition and the code block need to be on separate lines.

Many languages work this way, including C, C++, Pascal, PHP, and a number of others. Otherwise, the interpreter would not be able to discern where the condition ended and the code block began. "THEN" is optional. To the best of my knowledge it is completely ignored by the interpreter.
