Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    help with set structure

I am organizing info on several different types of sales transactions all of which have different information that I need to track. Should I have one SALES.set that incorporates fields for the information for all the types of sales, or several sets, one for each type of sale? Is there a way to incorporate all of the seperate sets into one set?
EX: SALES -> WALK-IN PARTS SALES
    REPAIR JOBS
    NEW VEHICLE SALES
    SHIP OUT SALES

    SEPERATE PROBLEM

I also want to be able to have the line_item table look up info from my inventory. I have several different types of product that I sell, for which I track various different types of information. Can i do a conditional look up so that the line_item table will go to the correct table to look up the information for the differet types of parts? What would I base the look up condition on? Just looking for suggestions!

    EX: INVENTORY -> PARTS
    VEHICLES
    SERVICES

    YES/NO

It depends on what you want to achieve which is what you don't know. It would be worth your time to open the AlphaSports database and poke your nose around; see how the sets are 'setup', etc. Get an idea how it's structured. You'll find a lot of similarities between it and what you want to achieve. You can get to it by opening the A5V5 folder, then the Samples folder, then the AlphaSports folder and then dbl click AlphaSports.

YES - Study the Lookup field rules.

What would I base the look up condition on?

I don't know. I know nothing about your setup.

Knowing what you can achieve will not become reality until you imagine and explore.

      RE: help with set structure

      Mikki,

I agree with Ken. Consider that if you create a programming object (specific set) for each sales type you will have to do additional programming whenever your date changes and you get a new category. So I suggest a field for category (sales type).

Remember that you can have a different *form* for each category with all the forms based on the same set but containing different fields.

Or, you could have one big form with all the fields but showing and hiding fields based on the sales type. ( I did something like this for a bibliography application. Different reference types require different fields)

But all in all I recommend solution one. HOw about a first form where the user chooses a sales type. Based on what is entered there the appropriate form pops up to capture the rest of the information.

Thanks for your help guys. Got the conditional look up worked out. It's gonna work great - I hope. As far as the sales set, I'm still debating on a course of action.
