Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Xdialog boxes

    I have two situations working with Xdialog boxes and their variables that I could use help with.

    First situation;

    Ive created a dialog box with a list box of years to select by user, Ex. 2003,2004, etc. this produces a newy variable. I then created a function using dir_create_recurse that will create the next years subfolder for new data. I would like to combine these two functions into one on push button operation. The next year would be selected and that year would have its own folder created. How would I use the newy variable in the location path of dir_create_recurse?

    Second Situation:

    I have many records to enter at a give time where one of the fields is a date entry. I would like to have the user preselect the date thru a dialog box and have it entered automatically.
    Ex. I have a dialog box where the user can enter a date, producing a variable datetr. I would like this selected date to be inserted into a date field trandate in an embedded browser.
    Thanks for your help.

    RE: Xdialog boxes

    Don,

    You're generally better off putting different questions in separate topics. This makes them easier to follow and to answer. (I, and I'm sure others, have been known to look at a message with many questions and decide "I just don't have time to decipher it all right now so somebody else will have to answer it.")

    Assuming "Newy" is a character variable and the folder is to be named with the value in "newy", the structure would be something like this:
    dir_create_recurse("parent_path>+chr(92)+var->newy)

    Assuming the parent_path is the path of your data on the local drive:
    dir_create_recurse(A5.get_path()+chr(92)+var->newy)

    Note: If you are networked and want the folder on the network, you will first have to define the network path by checking A5.get_master_path() also.

    -----------------------------------------------
    Question 2:

    It sounds like you are saying, "I want to have a default date value that always uses the last date entered." If that's correct, here's how I did it just a couple days ago....

    - set up a global variable in the Autoexec script to hold the date. ("gdate" for the purpose of this description.)
    - set the starting default value in the Autoexec -or- leave it undefined in which case the default for the first entry will be blank.
    - define the field's default value to be the value of the global variable. (I think I also defined the global variable in the table just to be sure it would always exist even if the autoexec didn't run but I'm not sure. It's also possible that I tried it and it overwrote the value from the autoexec. Test it to be sure.)
    - In the OnWrote event of the field, put a short script to reset the value of "gdate" to the value in the field:
    DIM GLOBAL gdate as d
    gdate = "tablename>->"mydatefield>

    Of course, tablename and mydatefield would be replaced by the appropriate names from your database.

    If you wanted to keep "yesterday's" value as the default, you would have to save the value in a table, text file, or registry variable at some point and read it in from the autoexec the next time you started. If it were reasonable to store it just before the application closed, I would do it that way just to avoid the overhead of opening and closing a file numerous times.

      RE: Xdialog boxes

      I just re-read your question about the date. If you want the user to preselect the date, I would still set up the global variable and just let the user redefine it in your dialog box.

      Then, using the OnWrote (NOT CanWrite) event would allow them to change it "on the fly" if that is desirable. If it's not desirable, just leave out that step.

        Cal,
        I see your point about packing a couple of questions in one posting. Thanks for the tip.
        Question #1's Answer seems straight forward. As for #2, "Ill have to play around with this and see what happens. Thanks for the quick response..
