Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Windows XP and 100% usage issue work around found?

I have about 15-20 pc's running Win98, Win2000, and Win XP. On the XP pc's only, the following occurs. When in enter or change mode and trying to multitask such as running Word, the PC slows to a crawl. By crawl I mean, typing, then seeing the letters appear 15 seconds later. After going back into Alpha and changing out of enter or change mode the PC is it's self again. The 5 Pros I have, 4 are Dells and the other is a AMD 2.0ghz. Dells are 1 P4 1.8 and the other 3 are P4 2.0's. The runtime and full versions are affected and the problem has existed in every patch although, I just figured it out this last week.
And I have tried the -nodb??? switch with no different results.
We've instructed all to not leave the XP pc's in change mode for the time being.

    Jim,
I too have been having a great deal of problems with cpu usage and ram (I have 456 RAM) I installed the Sharewear program and now I can get a little relief.
Down load and install FreeRam XP

      1) Are you running the XP machines optimized ?
      2) If you have it,as a test, shut off your virus checking on those machines and see if you get a significant change in behavior
      3) If Alpha is the only task running on the XP machines, do you get normal speed??

I've tried the ram scrubbing programs with no change. We use a dos program also on these pc's for terminal mode to a unix server too, but even with those all closed the PC i'm typing on now took 10 seconds to alt-tab back here and my typing has become sluggish. It might have something to do with the dos emulation, but in every case by closing the A5 window, the crawling effect was fixed.

          Jim:

I had a conflict with something called PTSNOOP.exe. Your description sounds like what was occuring with a clients machine.

CTRL-ALT-DEL will bring up what's running on the machine.

PTSNOOP is a com package that ships with low end modem boards that are software driven with the PCTEL chipset.

If not the PTSNOOP scenario, try MSCONFIG and trim down your startup programs to a minimum. Might help track down the problem.

Here is something that slowed down Alpha 5, V 4.5 to a crawl!

            WARNING FROM 1ST HAND EXPERIENCE!!!

I would like to tell you about a nasty experience my son has just had on his new Compaq computer an AOL Version 8.0! He has a computer that is a little over a month old! Top of the line and one of the fastest Pentium CPU available! Last Thursday the office manager for his company (ABC Fire, Inc.) told me that the office computer was running very slow and several of the programs on it one not even run! I worked with it for several hours with no avail in trying to fined the problem! They finally called the company (JS Electronics') they purchased it from and they came and picked it up and they worked to fined the problem and spend more than one day in doing so! They finally did a clean reinstall of the operating system Windows XP Pro and the computer perform OK after that! They then started reinstalling all of the program that came with it when they delivered it! Worked fine! Then they started reinstalling the programs that was installed buy them and finally discovered that the problem was AOL 8.0!! The company told Jeff my son that they had 3 other calls since his problem about the same thing! So warn your friends and if you have installed 8.0 I would suggest removing! They have had his computer for 2 days now at a Software problem at $65.00 to correct the problem, when it wasn't a computer
problem! If you would like you can forward this information and experience onto your friend who have AOL!

Wow, I have a ME and W98 systems and all of a sudden our systems drag down to 98% usage within a few minutes. We have just started our new program with V5 and right now we are very disappointed with the speed and performance. If we shut down the application Presto the resourse restore right away. Simply put alpha is a resource hog.

We use the -nodbcheck and it does not help at all. The syntax we use is
                shortcut
                "C:\qses\qses.adb""-nodbcheck"
                file types ADB
                C:\PROGRA~1\A5V5\Alpha5.exe -nodbcheck

If we run alpha.exe with alpha sports and simply scroll (holding the down key) resourses disappear before our eyes.

                  Your shortcut needs to be

                  "C:\Program Files\A5V5\Alpha5.exe" "C:\qses\qses.adb" -nodbcheck

                  for the nodbcheck to work

Well Lenny that works worse than then the example I was using. Why is that? My Folders options always puts a %1 after my text. Is that correct?

What's the deal with all these resources be sucked up by Alpha? Tis is not good.

Well I found the Problem. If the font is more than 224Kb in size, alpha will suck up the resources. This is not problem in XP or NT.

There seems to be some fonts that Window 9x has a hard time with. Although they are listed as Truetype fonts when alpha repaints itself the amount of resources necessary for this is abundant. For example I have a font Called Jokeman.ttf When this is on a form it will crash within 500 records being fetched on all forms. If I change the font to Arial the alpha does not crash at all.

Seems that some of the fonts are bitmap fonts and need tons of resources to repaint itself over and over again. When developing keep the fonts to simple style and all should be well.

I have to redesign my entire application due to this. All fonts will be changed to Arial or other win type fonts.

By the way size does not seem to be a factor. Jack

You bring up an interesting issue. Using non standard Windows fonts can create real problems, particularly if you move the application to a computer that doesn't have the particular font loaded. As you have found, it is best to stick to such basic fonts as Arial, Times, Ms Sans Serif, etc.

I have one application that uses the Ms Comic font which may not be loaded on all versions of Windows. I use the Wise install program to create an install program and must include the font in the install.
