Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Transform

    I'm having a terrible problem with what I call a transform function. I know this is not the same as referred to in the field rules, but perhaps it should be.

    In any event, I need to change/modify/transform, a user's entry in a character field which only accepts numbers. The change needs to be made in the CanDepart event, so that when a user enters "1" for example, the field is transformed into "01". Similarly if he enters "2", then the field is changed to "02".

    I've tried the "set value of a field" function, but it does not seem to yield the results I need. I can do this outside of the database with an operation, but that will create other problems for me. Shouldn't this be a transform function or am I missing something????

    RE: Transform

    Assuming that the table is not part of a set and the form is based on the table.

    t=table.current()
    t.change_begin()
    If val(t.field)>0 .and. val(t.field)

      RE: Transform

      Isn't the key point here that the field cannot be numeric. It has to be character. Also, an an alternative way would be to put this into the OnDepart event:

      if len(field.value)=1
      field.value="0"+alltrim(field.value)
      end if

        I just tested this and it works well from the OnDepart, CanDepart, or OnChange events.

          RE: Transform

          Thanks guys:

          I tried both of these suggestions and I cannot get them to work. Part of the problem is that I am using the CanDepart event to check for duplicates using a comnplicated function. This "ApprNumber" field is one item that is used to calculate another expression which in turn is checked for duplicates.

          I am using the year and the month along with this number to make up this field viz. "2002-12-01", "2002-12-02", etc.

          Each one of these needs to be unique. The lookup and duplicate checking is working fine, so now I'm down to this function. If I put the expression in the OnDepart, the CanDepart precedes it and I get an error. Therefore, what I need is to transform the entry in the CanDepart area.

          Thanks for any additional help.

            Gary:

            Maybe it's me, but I keep getting "Apprnumber not found". Apprnumber is the name of the field.

            Am I messed up?

              Gary:

              I figured out that I had to delete some code in another place to fix one problem.

              Now I am getting A5 telling me "property not found" on the line "if len(field.value)=1"

              Make any sense to you?

                is field the name of your field?

                and is field a character field?

                  Why not post the entire script so we can take a deeper look?

                    No. The name of the field is apprnumber.

                    Yes, it is character.

                      I know - I always tell everyone else that too.

                      It's ok. I figured it out. It's getting so confusing that I'm about to write my own "Peter Wayne" book when I'm done!!!!!

                      Thanks for your help. You're the best!

                        Gary (and anyone else):

                        Here's the corrected code. Thanks to Gary and Charlie for getting me started!

                        t=table.current()
                        if len(trim(t.field))=1 then
                        t.field="0"+substr(t.field,1,1)
                        end if

                        As you can see, you need to have the table opened. Also, you need to trim the "Len" function. "Len" by itself will return the length of the character field, not what is in it. That's why when I entered a 1 by itself, I got a wrong result. The trim function sees what is in the field and thus you can test for it. Therefore, if the user enters "1" this function will correct itself and conversely if he enters "01" it will be all right too.

                        Again, my many thankks to Gary and Charlie. Just goes to show you that by giving each other a hand we can all help ourselves immensely!
