Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

A few questions about alphas security options

A few questions about alphas security options
user_name() gets the name of the user
how could I get the group name? (I set rules by the groups rather then each user)

I would like to give permission to my client administrator to add users and attach them to an existing group, but I dont want them to be able to change the security option or to remove it, etc. they should only have the availably to add users to existing groups. could that be done? Maybe via Xbasic or so? They are using the runtime version

It would nice to have this option; just like Alpha blocks more users (above the package limit) to log on to a network, if we could have the option to set a variable with any lower number then the package limit and Alpha should only allow that many users to log on, this will give us a simple solution to limit the amount of users on our applications according to what we make up with our clients regardless of the runtime package we purchase from alpha (not to exceed the limit)

    Thank You

RE: A few questions about alphas security options

Since a user can be part of many groups, the concept of a group_name() function doesn't make sense unless it returned all of the groups. I'm not sure if there is a function to return this, though.

RE: A few questions about alphas security options

      Try the function "user_groups()"

I believe it will return a list of all the groups a user belongs to. You can then use filter_string() to see if the group is in the list.

            Hello daniel,

            What about this:

a5_get_user_assignments (master_password as c, user_name as c) allows the Administrator to get a list of groups to
which a user is assigned. Returns a CR-LF delimited list.

user_groups() has been added, but not yet released. it will be in the next patch.

Thanks actually I was referring to this question
I would like to give permission to my client administrator to add users and attach them to an existing group, but I dont want them to be able to change the security option or to remove it, etc. they should only have the availably to add users to existing groups. In regards to your suggestion to control the users, I am a bit skeptic to that approach
What happens if a user gets kicked out from the application by an error or network disconnect, etc. the application wont free up the users space. If you think in to it you will find many more hardships about that approach
I am not saying it cant be done but it requires a lot work and testing
I would not wont my client to call me only 8 people are logged on to the system and I paid for 10 users and all I will be able to tell him log every one off and restart the server!

RE: A few questions about alphas security options

I suppose it would be possible to write a script where everyone is forced to logout (using OnTimer), and the number of users reset to zero, then allow everyone to log back on.

Or, perhaps, again using OnTimer, have the active users log to a file to verify the count somehow.
