Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    install maker

I'm new to alpha5 and just heard about install maker. Sounds like it's something for making a database a type of exe program. Is this included with version5 or is it an addin?

    Thank you,
    Dave

    RE: install maker

It is included with Alpha Five but requires the Runtime version. It allows you to create an install package that a user can run to install the A5 runtime and your app.

Thanks for replying Aaron. I have the runtime version installed but can't find the insall maker option. Are there instructions for doing this somewhere. I'd like to test it out.

      Sinerely,

Goto the control panel for your application. It's under Tools->Utilities->Create Install Package.

I have version5 on my system. I opened up a program in developer and have no option for utilities under tools. Am I missing something?

            RE: install maker

are you looking for the installmaker in the runtime version, or the full version?

it is available from the full version only if the runtime is also installed on the same machine.

                1. Install v5.
                2. Install v5RT.
                3. Download patch 1021.
                4. Activate patch 1021.
                5. Open the full version of A5.
                6. Open a database, any database.
                7. Go to the Control Panel.
                8. Click Tools, Uitlities, Create Install Package.
                Follow the directions.

There needs to be one additional step.

                  2a. Run v5RT

This sets some registry values so that A5V5 knows about A5V5RT. Otherwise, the installmaker won't show up.

                      RE: install maker

Thanks for the help. Got another question on it. When you first start it in step 1, there's an option to choose either "application files only" or "both alpha five runtime and application files". I plan on burning this onto a cd for people who don't have alpha on their machines. Which one should I choose.

                      Thanks,
                      Dave

If they don't have the runtime on their machine, then you would need to install it. So, you need to choose "Both Application and Runtime."

You need to find a program that will convert jpg files into ico files. I don't know of one off hand. You might want to try Microangelo, which is an ico editor or Irfanview, which is an image viewer that can do basic image manipulation and conversions.

Can't Alpha open your jpg file directly?

If it can, why convert it to an ico file?

You could convert it to a bmp file, which Alpha can
                              also use.

                              Regards,
