Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Closing Multiple Forms

    I have a form with a menu button on it. When the Menu button is selected a dialog form opens indicating other forms to go to (open). My problem is that I can get the dialog form to close but not the form that called the dialog form. I want to make the dialog menu form generic to work on any form.

    I tried using the action scripting to 1. close the dialog form then 2. close the current form. Where am I going wrong? I hope this makes sense...

    Hi Phil,

    "I tried using the action scripting to 1. close the dialog form then 2. close the current form."

    I presume this code is attached to a button. On which form is the button?

      Put a button on each form with the following in the onPush event:

      parentform.close()

        For clarification..

        Form1 is the form that has a BUTTON called MENU

        Form2 opens when the MENU button is selected and Form2 is a dialog form that has 10 buttons on it to select other forms. When I select any of the 10 buttons, I want form2 to close, form1 to close, then open a new form based upon the button selected on form2.

        Gary I seem to remember using the parentform.close() and still just form2 closed. Any combination I tried I could get form2 to close but never form1.

            Phillip:

            I see what you want to do.

            In form1, your menu button needs to have the following code:

            dim f as p
            f=form.load("form2","dialog")
            f.window_position("center","center")
            f.show()
            f.close()
            parentform.close()

            In form2, each button calls another form. Simply put a parentform.close() in each one.

            You have been able to close form2 without a problem. The trick to also closing form1 is to put a parentform.close(0 right after the f.close() statement. This is because in a dialog form, comntrol returns to the calling script right after the f.show() statement.

              Gary,
              Still could not get it to work. I have attached a simple db showing the setup. Open form 1, select button, the dialog should open, then select the button again (you will get an error), if it works right, the dialog and form1 should close and then form 2 should open.

              thanks

                Phillip:

                Here is what I have come up with:

                Button on Form1:

                dim f as p
                f=form.load("testmenu","dialog")
                f.window_position("center","center")
                f.show()
                f.close()
                parentform.close()
                dim f as p
                f=form.load("form2","dialog")
                f.show()
                f.close()

                Button on testmenu:

                parentform.close()
