Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    query detach

    Hello,
    My manager and I have a form with around 20 buttons on it. Each button kicks off a query which are shown on a table browse on the same form. After we click about 15 of the buttons, an error message appears, "Invalid filter or order expression". What we think we have to do is detach the previos queries so we can continue to run more. The problem is that we can't quite figure out how to do that. We tried adding an xbasic script to the "on push" function of a button with the following script in it:

    tbl=table.("table_name")
    tbl.query_detach_all()

    This does not seem to work. We get a message saying "table not found". We know we have the correct table name keyed in. Are we missing something in the script? Any help would be appreciated.

    Sincerely,
    Dave

    RE: query detach

    Hello this is a guess

    I saw something in the manual about a multistate button

    In alpha sports this is shown with 26 buttons running queries on last names

    Maybe this will help you

      RE: query detach

      Early on playing with the Multi-state buttons in a test app, I would get an error like you described every time on the 16th click. I posted the app but others could not duplicate the problem.

      Someone suggested changing an index, and it made the error take longer to appear and more inconsistently. I still think there's some hidden issue.

        Do you have the "Show All" (xbasic or action script code) on the buttons? I put it on the first part so that when the button was pressed, the first thing that happens is all records are made avaible for the query and then the query is run. Works great.

          I'm new to this software but is that the same as customer.show()? Could you please detail how that script should look?

          Thank you,
          Dave

            RE: query detach

            Show all records is located as an icon on the incon bar to the left ofd the spy glass with the key. It is also can be found in action scripting. It simply releases a query and all records are now available.

            I've never heard of customer.show() other than it would be part of an xbasic script to show a form named 'customer'.

              RE: query detach

              As a followup, place a button on your form, give it a name and press Next. Click the green + and choose Query in the Catagory column. Choose Show All Records (3rd from the top) in the Action column. Walla, That's all folks.

              Now if you want the Xbasic equivilant, open the On Push event for the button and click the icon just to the right of the pair of glasses icon. Then click Edit Action. Now you have the Xbasic version.

                RE: query detach

                if you have this:

                tbl=table.("table_name")
                tbl.query_detach_all()

                then your problem is a simple typo.
                should be:

                tbl=table.open("table_name")
                tbl.query_detach_all()

                  So, what's the difference between Detatch and ShowAll and when is one preferred over the other?

                  Thanks,

                    RE: query detach

                    I tried
                    topparent.show_all()

                    I don't seem to get the error anymore but it still doesn't clear out the previous queries.
