    Default Survey Says...

On a form, when defining buttons or inserting code for onchange, ondepart, etc, how many of you place all the code as part of the form or how many place the code for the button, onchange as an external script and you use the PLAY SCRIPT function on the form? Is there a general rule of thumb for this?

    Just curious...

I put everything I can on the button. My control panel is so crowded anyway its hard to find anything. I'm not sure there is a right way for this but for me this ie easier.

    Philip,

I am certainly no expert, but I find it easier for me as the application developer, to put the code on what it logically applies to; that is, if the action applies to the button, I put the code on the button; if the action applies to the form, that's where I put it. I confuse myself enough without looking for trouble.

    Hi Philip....

I'll play devil's advocate...... if the code is portable, in that it's function can be useful to several different buttons on several different forms, I don't mind making the script global & then on the form(s) just call the global script from each button with script_play(). If it is just for one button..... I don't see any reason to make the script global.....

    Hello Philip,

I'll throw my two cents in here. If the script is simple, I usually just code it on the button's onpush event. If the code is rather complex, I find it much easier to debug and work with the script when it is a seperate script. I don't have to keep putting the form into design mode to change and play with the script.

All of the responses were great. I have used the same reasoning for most all the responses. Jim's comment about having to go into the form design mode was one of the reasons why I decided to ask the question.

    Thanks to all...
