Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    "Print Letter" button creation

I've searched high and low, but I just can't remember how to create a pre-defined button on a form to automatically print a letter. Thanks for your quick help, I'm desperate!

    Hello Rhea,

I have attached a flash player exe that demonstrates this for you. Just download the attached file and double click on it, and it will run and show you how to do this. I start from the control panel of the AlphaSports application. I then use the invoice form as a starting point.

    Good luck,
    Jim

        Your new toy

Jim maybe a quick article in the next newsletter on your new toy would be of interest. Looks like this was the premier showing to the board!

          RE: Your new toy

          Hello John,

Well, as you know :-) we will be using a new demonstration technique in the upcoming newsletter (We will be featuring a solution by John). And yes, it is kind of 'my new toy'. I wanted to test it using the message board, but I'm not sure that a flash distribution will be all that useful as a response medium to questions. Althought it is very fast to build a simple demonstration, this particular demo, in zip format, was about half the allowable upload size, which means that it would only be appropriate for smaller demonstrations because of the file size limitation. Streaming off a web site would be a better approach.

            Thanks.......

Jim thanks for your ongoing efforts you are making a valuable contribution. I believe that the flash player is a tremendously powerful learning tool. Im interested it what others have to say. Perhaps as these demonstrations develop, attach to FAQs or tips. Everyone at Alpha and others have worked very hard at improving the documenting for Alpha 5 V5. The one frustration I now have is finding something . For example the audit trails. A few weeks ago I went looking for it just knowing that this was a new feature. Maybe it was me but I went looking in User Guide, Xbasic and on an on until I found it in Whats New in V5. Maybe Im in information overload. Of course thats what we all are here for managing information, so perhaps a solution will not be far behind.

              RE: Thanks.......

              Jim (et al),

Neat toy, but.... My own feeling was 1) that the old fashioned way of telling the person the same thing probably would have taken you less time (??), 2) the file size of the file used here is still too large for some of us still on dial-up (not too bad for once in a blue moon but not good if it became a common way of responding to a question) and 3)in your flash thing, is there a way for the user to interact, like in a slide show (click next to continue)? In that regard I wonder what size a pdf slide show file would be. But even there, it seems like it would take even longer (way too long) to prepare one compared to just answering the question the old fashioned way.

Just some thoughts, maybe worth 2 cents, maybe not.

              Ray

That was a spectacular demonstration, and so much like a hands on demo. Thank you so much for your help!
