Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Data Entry

I'm having a problem with data entry. I've created a simple form where a user can enter records for a transaction database. I've turned Modal Entry on, and created a button to allow changes. Thus the user would press the button and begin entry of records. The problem is, that at the end of the entry, if the user continues past the last field in the database, Alpha5 "assumes" he/she wants to continue to add records and skips to a new record automatically. My question is, how do I turn this feature off? I want the user to Save each record. (I'm trying to avoid blank records.) The Save button can then invoke a dialogue which would allow for continued entry or stop entry at that point.

What could I be doing wrong here, because I can't seem to get this to work!

    RE: Data Entry

    Charles,

Any chance you could post a working model of your database here? If so, include instructions on which form you're working on.

Most would want data entry to continue without interruption if the user tabs through the last field on the data entry form, especially in high volume settings. An easy way to trap 'empty' records is to cancel() the save if the pending record is empty. I do this by putting a cancel() command in the CanSave event for the form if certain key fields are blank.

      RE: Data Entry

      Charlie,

There are a few ways you can do this ..

The easiest is to go to the properties of the form.

In form properties got to the form tab .. under restrictions scroll the select box down and check " Continuous Enter"

This should do what your looking for, otherwise Xbasic in CanSave event or Field events might be needed.

      Hope this helps ..

        Charlie,

I want the user to Save each record. The Save button can then invoke a dialogue which would allow for continued entry or stop entry at that point.

As Scott alluded to, go to the OnDepart event of the last field in your tab order, use action scripting to:1) Save the record; 2) pop up a dialog form asking to continue or exit. I've done similar but not this. You'll need a bit to trial and error to get the combination of a dialog you like as there will be more than one way, a straight dialog or a small form. Which ever way looks and works best for you.

        You can do it.

Thanks everyone! I thought I was going nuts for awhile. Seems so simple to do, but after three hours of work and workarounds, I just wasn't getting it!

Part of the problem, is that the last field on the form is a memo box, so users might go around it. I like the idea of checking whether certain fields are blank and the dialogue box.

Thanks again! Maybe this can help someone else out there!

            Charlie,

Just wanted to let you know your post from long ago did help someone -- I discovered the same problem today. At first I couldn't figure out if this was normal Alpha behavior or if I had done something wrong to make the form behave this way. Thanks to you & those that replied, I found out most of what I needed to know by reading this thread.

I solved my problem by putting an Action Script on the last field's On Depart event that Saves the Record, then Activates the Button Object that goes to my Receipt printing routine. Works like a charm. And, I was relieved to find out that I hadn't done anything wrong to make the form automatically begin entering a new record when the last field is tabbed out of!
