Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Condition Color Equations on Buttons

As I continue to explore, I have run into a minor glitch.
I used to value the A5v4 facility to add conditional colour and font properties in form design.

While working through Peter Wayne's fantastic Xbasic Tutorial, I came across the this.fill.forecolor="Red" xbasic code. When it didn't seem to work (probably my fault somewhere in the script), I went to try editing the form. Help. Where has the facility to put color equations into the properties? I have looked at the code explorer too. But that only seems to tell me what the settings are - but not what can be coded in.

    Am I being an idiot - - - again?

    Yours

RE: Condition Color Equations on Buttons

    Peter,

The colors of an object on your form are properties of that object. In design mode for your form, select the object and examine its properties. You can set the colors there.

If you're trying to change the color of an object in response to some event that occurs in your form, then you have to attach a short script to that event, that manipulates the properties of the desired object, and then refreshes it.

Thus far, this is all pretty general stuff, which you probably already knew. Tell us more about the details of what you're attempting for 'She who must be obeyed', and we'll help.

I change the colour of a button on a form depending on the button that has been pressed in the menu calling the form. I hope that makes sense.

Its very easy using action scripting.

Select set object properties and then add the button you wish to alter and select the property you wish to modify. I would guess thats foreground, select the colour. If I can do it so can you

Its also conditional based on a variable which is set by the menu, so it might be what you are trying to achieve.

If youve made the move to the big boys xbasic stuff, disregard the above because thats like Chinese to me

        Tom

Under A5v4 there was the ability to design conditional colours on buttons and check boxes and so on. if (debit,"Green on white","white on red") for example, and you could pop the expression in the obbject's properties box in design mode.

I seem to have lost it. So I ask now: do I have to write a script on the on save event or something. If so, where do I find the syntax?

RE: Condition Color Equations on Buttons

          Peter,

The color equation settings for a button and checkbox are not available in the objects property box, however you have full control of them following Tom's advice above.

Where do you put the scripts? Well that depends on what you need.

Lets say you have a check box that a user can select Deposit or Withdrawal .. and you want the amount field to be Black for deposit and red for withdrawal.

The script would be put in the check box OnChange event.

Without knowing what your doing exactly its hard to give you exact instructions, but this gives you an idea.

Hope this clears it up some for you.
