Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Sorting Records

Can Someone explain to me how to sort my records? I have one field in each record indicating a Unit Number. I would like to sort all my records by unit number.

    Thanks for your quick help!
    Rhea.

    Rhea:

Are you talking about sorting records in an embedded browse on a form? If so, the easiest approach would be to go into Design of the form. Go into properties, on the Filter/Order tab. Assuiming your field is called unit_number, put unit_number into the Order expression field.

I do not have an embedded browse on my form, however, I did try to use the filter/order in form properties and put and used the order expression to sort by unit_number as you described. Unfortunaley, it didn't seem to sort at all. It shows unit numbers sorted like so:
      1011
      1012
      1013
      103
      104
      105
      106
      1112
      107
      etc...

        RE: Sorting Records

try using an order the expression like:

        Val(Unit_Number)

A5 will then treat the unit_number like numeric field, instead of like a character field when sorting.

Bingo! It works! Thanks Vince. I'm sorry to be a bug, but now would you be able to help me with this one. I just realized that not only do I need to sort by unit number, but also by which building. You see, we have a Tower building with units 101 to 2000 and then we have a Court building with units 101 to 408. The database sorts the units great now and shows them like so:
          101 Court
          101 Tower
          102 Court
          102 Tower
          etc...
I would love to be able to sort them like so:
          101 Court
          102 Court
          etc...then,
          101 Tower
          102 Tower
          103 Tower
          etc...
I tried to enter this expression into the same sort field:
          Val(unit_number)+Court_or_tower
But it just put everything back in the order it was before (unsorted).
I also tried this expression without successs:
          Val(unit_number)+(Court_or_tower)

Please disregard above message, I figured out a much easier way. Just viewed in browse mode, right clicked in field and sorted unit_number first, then court_or_tower next. Thanks so much for all of your help!

              Try this:

              Court_or_tower+str(Val(unit_number))

                Hi Gary,
I am so glad you posted your reply before I told everyone to disregard my last message! I just realized that just sorting in browse mode does not save it sorted when reopening the program. Your expression did the trick though, thanks so much-your a life saver!
