Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Major Problem - Can't load A5

All of a sudden, I cannot load A5. I have tried rebooting the computer, both after a restart and a complete power down and then restart. I have resorted to a complete removal of a5v5 and the runtime, and then reinstalled both, and applied the most recent patch (build 1020). No luck. It is not my application. I cannot start A5v5 at all. If I click on the Alpha5 icon from my desktop, I get the Alpha 5 version5 splash screen, and the progress bar gets stuck at about 1/4 the way through. I then have to use the Windows Task Manager, which says that Alpha Five is "not responding". PLEASE HELP.

    RE: Major Problem - Can't load A5

This happened to me on a computer which thought, for some reason, that I had both the full and the runtime versions of A5v5 installed--even though I had only installed the run-time. The full version of A5v4 as well as the runtime of A5v4.5 was on that computer. It was frustrating but I managed to get the A5v5 runtime reinstalled by using the Windows control panel to Add/Remove programs and removing all of Alpha Five versions 4.x and 5, then using regedit to remove all references to Alpha Software in the registry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE. Then I was able to reinstall the runtime.

        Peter,

You mean we cannot have installed on one computer all the following:

        A5V4, A5V4RT, A5V5 and A5V5RT

I was planning to do the above.. am I asking for trouble?

i have them also all on one machine. i just reported how i solved a problem on another machine. i don't know whether all the steps were necessary--since i didn't need a5v4 or the 4.5 runtime on that machine any more, i removed them, and then i was able to successfully apply patches to the v5 runtime.

purge utility ? (RE: Major Problem - Can't load A5

There appear to be several cases where registry conflicts are causing problems for installations.

It might be nice if alphasoft (or someone) could write a small utility to purge all registry references to Alpha 5 entries, to create a "virgin" machine.

Obviously this would be a last ditch attempt when only a reinstall would seem appropriate.

Otherwise we are all wasting time trying to find/identify alphasoft registry entries, when we don't really know what is written during an install/update.

Or explicitly tell folks, in the docs, to uninstall via Control Panel, since that appears to purge the registry(?).

RE: purge utility ? (RE: Major Problem - Can't loa

I think any installation program should purge the registry for any old information "FIRST", then "ON COMPLETION" of the installation... re-write registry settings.

I'm not sure how Alpha does this, but I would think this might be the best method.

                Regards,

                  RE: Major Problem - Can't load A5

I have Alpha5 RT running on 15 computers in a Dealership and 2 computers stop running Alpha RT every now and then. When I run "Registry First Aid", it fixes the problem. Even the trial version that fixes only the first 10 registry problems has always fixed the problem of not loading the RT version. All computers are running XP Pro.

                  Hope this helps.
