Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    CRLF to comma delimited

    Hi all,

    What is the smartest way to convert a CRLF delimited list into a comma delimited one?

    I want to convert,

    Red
    Green
    Blue

    to

    Red,Green,Blue

    There must be several methods and I wonder what our collective experience with the problem has been.

    Thanks,
    Bill

    Morning Bill....

    I would take a look at strtran I think it will do what you are wanting to do.

      strtran(input_string,crlf(),",")
      will do it, although there may be a trailing comma if your input contains a trailing crlf().

        RE: CRLF to comma delimited

        Thanks to both of you for the identical advice which worked nicely. These days I am always afraid I've missed some new Ver.5 function or method. It's a new psychopathology: methodological insecurity syndrome.

        I'll cope.

        What I am doing with this is creating a list of email addresses with a multiselect list box, getting the list into a variable, and sending to the list using the internal email client.

        The xdialog returns a crlf delimited list and the email client wants a comma delimited list.

        I am happy to say the whole thing works very well, not that I have any immediate need for this, you understand. It's just a pleasant exploration of another of the seemingly limitless abilities of V5.

        Best wishes to all,
        Bill

          peter's suggestion is correct, but i would do an allrim() on the input string to make sure that there is no trailing crlf() -- because you don't want a trailing comma.

            Hi Selwyn,

            Thanks again for the help. To be safe I'll go ahead and do it but I can inform everyone that the list generated by a multi-select list box has no trailing crlf and therefore strtran produces no trailing comma.

              As a follow up to this......

              If one wanted quotes around the commas

              Red","Green","Blue","

              How would this calculation be altered:

              strtran(input_string,crlf(),",")

                  RE: CRLF to comma delimited

                  Okay. Sorry to be a pain in the butt. I ran this against a hypothetical list of states, and it worked like a charm when I showed it in a message box as a calculated field.

                  Ohio","Florida","Kansas","

                  Now, to complete this I need a comma at the beginning and a fake value at the end, like:

                  "Ohio","Florida","Kansas","ZZZZ"

                  But when I tried to use the quote(), it seemed to turn the whole thing into a string. How do I do this?

                  BTW, obviously my goal is to end up with my comma delimited choices with quotes around them. If there's a better way, I'm all ears.

                    RE: CRLF to comma delimited

                    I figured this out.

                    ="\""+ strtran(Var->xx,crlf(),quote(",")) +"QQQ"+"\""

                    Had to use the escape character (and leaning the right way!!) the QQQ just represents fake value I intend to use.

                    It allows me to close up the string with a value that should never be there.
