Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    PDF trouble

    Hi,

I've read the comments posted on PDF troubles. I'm using XP, and my PDF viewer quit working. When I go into Control Panel - Printers, the PDF driver is greyed out. In properties it asks for a driver.

Where do I find a driver to install? Do I need to reinstall A5V5?

    Thanks

    Tom

was it working fine and then it just stopped?

    have never heard of that.

did you install something else on your computer?

try reinstalling a5 from scratch using your original cd.

before installing, go to the printers folder and delete the following drivers.

    pdf
    text
    html
    rtf

      RE: PDF trouble

Interesting. I think there is a general problem here. There are now several reports of Windows XP A5v5 users losing their PDF drivers. I have done a complete reinstall of a5v5 and it made no difference, the problem still persists (see my previous post on 5 Nov 02, 10:41 pm, msg ID 10330). This problem is a major concern for me because the output from my A5v5 application gets posted in PDF format on a web site. Without it I cannot update the web site.
I have approached the manufacturer of the PDF driver in A5v5, Amyuni, to see if they can offer any possible solutions. I will post the information here if I get an affirmative response.

        RE: PDF trouble

Just for the record I am also running WinXP and I do not have any problems with the .pdf files. In control panel/printers if I try to get the properties of the alpha placed PDF driver I get a message box asking me if I want to install the amyuni PDF 157 printer driver and I answer no.

          Scott,
Do you have the latest Adobe Acrobat Reader version 5.1 installed too? If so, what is the version of A5v5 you are running and which did you install first, A5 or Acrobat reader? This might just give us a pointer to the problem. Thanks.

            Brett,

I did some playing here .. this is what I found ...

If you try to print using the PDF driver an error does occur .. but if I save the doc as .pdf I can then view and print with no problem .. This is with build 1345/1020 and acrobat 5.0

I don't think that the PDF driver alpha places in the printer folder is meant to be an actual printer, just the instructions for the .pdf to actually be created.

Try saving the report as .pdf and then when Acrobat opens try printing to your default printer. This should work.

Maybe Selwyn can explain exactly how this driver is meant to work, but I believe that is is not meant to be selected as an actual printer.

            Hope this sheds some light.

              RE: PDF trouble

the PDF driver that appears in the control panel's printer folder is a5's PDF driver. it cannot be used as a regular printer. it can only be used from within a5 by a5 itself.

i.e. you cannot (and should not) select this printer when you print a report. (there is no need to do this anyway because the file/save as command from print preview, or the save as command when you right click on the report in the control panel save the report as pdf).

in theory, when a5 starts up it should load the PDF driver, and then when a5 quits, it should unload the PDF driver. however, we don't do this because it increases the load time for a5 substantially.

same comments apply to the "html", "rtf" and "text" printers that you see in the control panel.

OK .. thats what I thought also .. thanks for the confirmation Selwyn .. I believe they were trying to print the report directly to the PDF driver.

                  Selwyn,

I reinstalled A5V5, after deleting the drivers you mentioned. I did not Un-install A5, I just re-installed it. Files seemed to copy fine.

When I went to start Alpha, I got the message: "PDF driver failed to load with error: The printer name is invalid."

The other drivers were installed successfully.

I also have Fineprint pdfFactory installed as a pdf driver. I use this with A5V4.5

                  Suggestions...

Do I need to uninstall A5 and re-activate?

I went to the control panel and removed A5 and I got the same message, "The printer name is invalid", upon restarting.

                    Suggestions...

Has anyone had a compatibility issue with Fineprint pdfFactory as a pdf driver?

                      RE: PDF trouble

I've been running Fineprint PDF Factory PRO for about a year and a half and it does a fine job. I have not run v5 much as I was finishing up a project in v4.5 and didn't want to muddle my poor mind trying to keep straight which features I could and couldn't use, so I can't tell you how it does with version 5.

                        Scott:

If you print using the PDF driver, and check off the 'Print To File' checkbox that appears in the 'Print' dialog, the error does not occur.

This apparently works when using the PDF driver from *any* application (e.g., MS Word, Excel, etc.), not just A5 V5.

                        Interesting...

Just to put the record straight, George's suggestion does not work for me. My problem is that A5v5 will not load the PDF driver at startup. It gives the error "PDF driver failed to load with error: the specified port is unknown".
I cannot print *anything* in PDF format from A5v5, I cannot "save" or "save as" or anything else. Zero, zilch. Nothing.

Thanks for the suggestion but it does not work for me. A5v5 will not load the PDF driver at startup. So I cannot print in PDF format, "save", "save as" or anything else for that matter. See also my comments to George's message below (msg ID 10635).
